is the second dog to share my life and the one who taught me the ropes of competition! He is a wonderful german shepherd and you couldn't ask for one with a better and more stable temperament. He isn't an extremely affectionate dog, but if you have a ball or frisbee to play with, you will be his best friend for life! He loves being around people and is constantly by my side (or on my feet!), he just doesn't want to be cuddled.

When I chose Cody, I did what a lot of people do. I chose him because he was the largest and nicest looking male puppy in the litter. However, on the day I was to take him home, I took a roll of film of a particular puppy, thinking it was him. As it turned out, that roll of film was taken of his sister (who looked just like him) because he was between my legs the entire time I was snapping away! We have been inseparable ever since. I know that Cody is a gift and I am very thankful he is a part of my life.

Cody is an independent dog. His independence coupled with him being my first dog, made him difficult to train. Since I had never trained a dog before, I used all the wrong methods with him. I trusted my trainers (I was a FOOL), but finally found a wonderful trainer who lead me in the right direction of training. Thank you, Jan Santel, for giving Cody and I the foundation needed to form a strong and trusting working relationship. I could never have achieved anything without your guidance and friendship.

After I changed my training methods, Cody learned that obedience could be fun, but nothing was more fun than agility. Agility is Cody's first love and he was wonderful at the sport until he retired at the age of 6 due to a disc disease. Cody competed and received his titles in NCDAA agility, which no longer exists. His NCDAA titles were transferred to UKC when they began agility trials. Agility is a wonderful sport and is a great way to learn to communicate and bond with your dog. If you are interested in the sport of agility or obedience, please go to: the Dogpatch.

Although Cody is now retired from dog sports, he will be competing in Flyball games at local tournaments as well as helping out at local Flyball demonstrations.

Cody was my best friend for 12.5 years. Since he had been in my life so long, he had been there for me during all the difficult times of my adult life. I don't think I could have survived some of them with my sanity intact, if it weren't for him. I feel very lucky to have him in my life and I love him with all my heart.

At 10 yrs. of age, he was officially diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy. To find out information on this debilitating disease, please click here.

Since the german shepherd is not the breed for everyone, please visit the Purina site to see which breed best fits you and your lifestyle. If the german shepherd is the breed for you, please check out the following web pages:
