Biography

Tori Amos was actually born Myra Ellen Amos, on the 22nd of August in 1963 in North Carolina. She began playing piano at the age of two and a half, and at five was enrolled in Baltimore's Peabody Institute as a child prodigy. Rumour is, she was ejected for playing the songs of John Lennon and the Doors "by ear" after six years of study. At seventeen, in 1980, she released her first single, "Baltimore"/"Walking with You" under her real name. She later adopted the name Tori, and chose that name because her friend's boyfriend said that she didn't look like an Ellen, she looked "more like a Tori". Eventually, after a release with Y Kant Tori Read, she was noticed by Doug Morris, who sent her to the UK so she might receive a better reception. She moved to London in 1991 and played small gigs around the town. Her 'debut' EP, Me and a Gun, was released in October, telling of when she was raped by an armed 'fan' on her way home after a gig. In January 1992, her debut album, Little Earthquakes, was released, and the next year was spent writing and recording Under the Pink. The first single, Pretty Good Year, reached number 7, and later when Boys for Pele came out, Professional Widow got her to number one. From the Choirgirl Hotel, however, was not at all like the outrageous (though delightfully wonderful and exciting) Boys for Pele (which is one of my favourites), for in it she wrote of her recent miscarriage and such, and is hailed (=)) as her most mature album, even now in 2003. To Venus and Back came out the next year, and Scarlet's Walk came out in 2002. Strange Little Girl, while considered another one of her albums, was not written by her. It includes songs such as "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "Heart of Gold", and even Eminem's "'97 Bonny and Clyde".

Tori on the need for a name change hmm...
