As I did with Janet Jackson and Avril Lavigne earlier this year, I score an "advanced" copy of Joss Stone's brand-spankin' new LP, Mind, Body & Soul, and, like its predecessors, it debuts atop the albums chart. This makes Stone the first & only artist to have two No. 1 J-SKWD albums in less than a year, following her disc of covers, The Soul Sessions (which re-enters at No. 10). Mind is a pretty solid disc of new material, all of it with a very 70's soul vibe, though it never sounds dated. Stone's voice is strong and impressive, as it was on her debut, though there are definitely times she could reel it in a little. Still, overall, it's a very good CD...though I'm not sure yet if I like it more or less than The Soul Sessions. Give me a few weeks to decide. And, oh yeah, she keeps easy control of the TrackList with "You Had Me".
I feel I should explain this week's No. 44 song, "A Real Love Survives [Rock Steady Remix]", by No Doubt Featuring Ms. Dynamite. The song is from last year's No Doubt box set, Boom Box, but really isn't by No Doubt at all…it's essentially just British artist Ms. Dynamite rapping over a remix of "Rock Steady". I recently stumbled upon when jonesing for new Dynamite music. She stopped promoting A Little Deeper in the US last year to raise her baby...and no one's really heard from her since. I'm sure she'll be back someday soon, but for now I've got this recent, very awesome recording to tide me over.
Nelly and Christina Aguilera (or, as I affectionately call her, Xtina) tilt their heads all the way back, as they zoom from 20 to 5 with "Tilt Ya Head Back", the second, better single from the southern rapper's more upbeat half of his two-simultaneous-albums stunt, Sweat. A bit further down, Fiona Apple bounds 16-9 and Jentina rides "French Kisses" 34-27. And at No. 43, with the week's "Top Debut", Destiny's Child make a nice comeback, as do fellow former Top 10 artists Mandy Moore (No. 49) and Nikka Costa (No. 50). All three artists supposedly have albums due in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Big names making a comeback in Fall? What a concept! ---Brandon "Jayson" Ulman
