My Lucky Stars

In the haunted house
The plot for My Lucky Stars starts off fairly straightforwardly, with Jackie and Yuen as two cops (Muscles and Ricky) chasing a couple of crooks. A very impressive car chase ends with them confronting the bad guys at a funfair. The crooks escape into the funfair taking Ricky with them as a prisoner.

Elsewhere, a police superintendant decides to try an unusual method for sorting out police corruption. He releases Samo Hung from prison and allows him to assemble a group of fellow criminals (the lucky stars). They are then put in a house with the attractive police inspector Woo (Sibelle Hu) and left to attempt to have their wicked way with her. After this has gone on for a while Jackie pops up out of nowhere for a brief fight scene, before disappearing again until the end of the film, back at the funfair.

Muscles, Inspector Woo and the lucky stars storm the secret hideout at the funfair, fighting henchmen all the way (including a near-infamous head-to-head between Sibelle Hu and Michiko Nishiwaki), as they attempt to find and release Ricky.

You could be forgiven for thinking that My Lucky Stars is two other films chopped together - an action adventure cop film starring Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, and a bizarre Chinese comedy starring Samo Hung and a group of character actors. Despite being billed as a Jackie Chan film, he only appears briefly in three separate sections at the beginning, middle and end of the film. In between are long, tedious and only occasionally amusing sequences, but then again, maybe they're just a uniquely Chinese humour.

This could have been a great film, but instead it's a few great action scenes with a lot of odd and sometimes irritating filler.
