Armour of God

Main image
Jackie plays treasure hunter Asian Hawk, who, as the film begins is attempting to steal a sword currently being worshipped by an African tribe. Unfortunately, he knocks the head off their statue in the process and is forced to make a rapid exit, first sliding crazily down a steep slope and then flying off in a hidden plane.

In Europe a group of Satannic monks, who covet the Armour of God and already have two pieces of it, hear about the recovery of the sword by Hawk. They plan to kidnap Laura, Hawk's old girlfriend from his days in a pop group, from her Paris fashion show and make the armour the ransom.

Meanwhile, Hawk is watching the auction for the sword and trying to inflate the bidding with a plant in the audience. A mysterious woman outbids everyone else by far.

When Hawk gets back to his hotel, Alan is waiting and explains about Laura's kidnap and that the remaining three pieces of the Armour of God are a ransom for her release. Hawk is initially unwilling to help, because Lan had stolen Laura from him, but even when persuaded points out that while he knows where two of the pieces are he's just sold the sword and doesn't know where it's gone. The two of them head to the home of the Count who has two of the pieces.

While sympathetic he's not willing to give them the pieces, but invites them to stay a few days. That night Alan attempts to steal the armour, but is caught. The Count calls the police, but Hawk promises to get him the pieces he doesn't have, so he relents. Hawk is surprised to discover that the mystery woman from the auction is actually the Count's daughter, May, who insists on coming along too.

The three of them head to a village near Frankfurt, where Alan is contacted by a monk. As a precaution he hasn't got the real armour with him. When the monks find out a fight erupts, leading to a car chase and their eventual escape.

That evening they are at a cafe where there is a talkative waiter who explains who the monks are and where their monastery can be found. Hawk and Alan ambush a couple of monks and steal their robes. In disguise, they travel to the monestary on a truck sent to the village to pick up prostitutes.

Unfortunately for them, the monks have been awaiting their arrival. They have drugged Laura and instructed her to drug Hawk and get the armour from Alan, so want them to rescue her. After interrogating one of the monks Hawk finds Laura and they all sneak out again when the prostitute truck returns to the village.

Back in the hotel things don't go quite to plan when Laura injects Alan instead of Hawk. In the morning, Laura and Alan are gone, along with the armour. There is no option, but for Hawk to go back in on his own and rescue them...

Armour of God is probably best known as the film that nearly killed Jackie, when a second take of a jump in the opening sequence resulted in him falling from a tree and literally cracking his head open on a stone, resulting in a hole he still has today. If you look closely you can see that his hair grows several inches after he gets into the plane, showing it was shot after his recovery.

Written and directed by Chan, this is a cracking action film. After the initial action it takes a while to get going, but the infiltration of the monestary is exciting and the big punchout at the end is spectacular. Armour of God is in the same class as Police Story and is therefore a must see. The special collector's edition DVD version of the film seemed much funnier than I remembered, so presumably the funny bits were what was cut out of the 'International' edition of the film I'd seen previously.
