History

In the mid 1800's, Irish Immigrants were trying to breed Bull Dogs with terriers to yield a game dog with extreme athleticism. The result of this cross breed is what the AKC refers to as, the American Staffordshire Terrier. The American Staffordshire Terrier was then selectively bred to be a muscular fighting dog. It's from those origins in which the American Pitt Bull Terrier was born. Pitt Bulls were then used by American farmers as guard dogs and to herd cattle.

Today, the American Pitt Bull Terrier is not bred to fight, but to be a loyal companion. A common misconception is that Pit Bulls are dangerous to keep, because of their aggression and a mythical locking mechanism on their jaw. While Pitt Bulls are known to be aggressive, their aggression is limited to other dogs. In fact, Pitt Bulls show little to know aggression to humans. As for the locking mechanism, the Pitt Bulls have an identical jaw structure to any other breed of dog. Studies have also shown that Pitt Bulls do not bite anymore than any other breed of dog.
