Ichiro Suzuki approaches Sisler's hits record...or does he?

People are still talking about Ichiro's 2004 hits "record" for 162 games, so I have chosed to leave this "article" on the table for review during the 2005 season :)

Once again we reach a point in baseball history where various "enthusiasts" take comfort in working up a "record breaker" season where no such season exists. Sure, the "thrill" of the chase creates "drama" for Ichiro and Seattle fans, but in reality, the "race" is NOT there! First lets take a quick glance at the season lines for the two players at issue:

PLAYER NAME...... GAMES AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS BA
George Sisler - 1920 StLouis 154 631 137 257 49 18 19 122 46 19 42 17 .407
Ichiro Suzuki - 2004 Seattle 162 704 101 262 24 5 8 60 49 63 36 11 .372

Definitely an AMAZING season for Ichiro, through 2004 season, Ichiro had more hits, 262, than Sisler! Sisler played in a season of only 154 games, ending the season with 257 hits! To accomplish the feat in more than 154 games is NOT a defeat of Sisler's record, although it IS a new record for a 162 game season, and a MAJOR accomplishment in baseball either way! For those of you who argue that "a record is a record regardless of season length", give Sisler, and his .407 season batting average, a season of 162 games! Sisler averaged 1.668 hits per team season game. This would mean that the aditional 8 games should have produced another 13-14 hits! Sisler's total would likely have been around 270 HITS FOR A 162 GAME SEASON! Another "debate" for the archives? You decide! However, for the purposes of this web page, since Ichiro did NOT accomplish at least 257 hits by the end of the 154th game of the season, Sisler remains the 154-game hits King! However, Ichiro will now be the 162-game King! Either way, congratulations to one of the greatest ball players of our era...Ichiro Suzuki!

Let's play ball!

Sometimes I wonder if there is any common sense involved in choosing players for the Baseball Hall of Fame. ANY "Hall" should be devoted to a player's ability to play the game! Their off-field activities should not overshadow a player's career. If this were the case Cobb and Ruth, to name only two, would be excluded. With this in mind, my Web of Fame will consist of a list of individuals whose accomplishments in baseball ON THE FIELD were above and beyond even the above average player. A player should not be only "above average", but should be beyond, in a level of their own to qualify as one of the "greats". Crowd favorites, media favorites, or tragedy, should not determine who is "in" and who is "out". A player should not have to wait a lifetime to be admitted, but must compete in a minimum number of games to qualify - no exceptions! For this "Web Page of Fame", the minimum for a non-pitcher is 1309 games - for serious baseballers, you will note this is 8 1/2 years at 154 games per year - and at least 1500 hits! For pitchers, the minimum is 2125 innings - 8 1/2 years at 250 innings per year - and at least 900 strike outs! (THIS MEANS A PLAYER MUST MEET THE AFOREMENTIONED CRITERIA BEFORE THEY WILL EVEN BE CONSIDERED FOR "ADMISSION", AUTOMATIC - SEE BELOW - OF OTHERWISE).

For AUTOMATIC admission, certain "minimums" SHOULD qualify a player for fame. Those "minimums" will be used here as they are as sound today as they were 50 years ago. Thus, there will be certain "automatics" that will place an individual in this Web of Fame, by meeting the minimums set forth above, PLUS at least one of the following categories:

ONE TRIPLE CROWN CAREER STAT 530 HRs Career BA of .330 1900 RBI
OR ONE OTHER SURPERIOR CAREER OFFENSIVE STAT 3100 Hits 700 SBs 1900 Runs

For Pitchers, One Of The Following Three Career Stats 300 Wins 3500 SOs Career ERA less than 3.00

Others may qualify with lesser statistics (I was working on a formula specific to catchers for "automatic" admission; however, the "greats" should have no problem qualifying, although not necessarily in an "automatic" category, once the formula is applied to their career!), but it will require a combination of above average stats in several areas to do so.

Each player will be rated on a formula, which will generate a "Career Rating", and a "Plate Rating". The higher the score, the better the player. These scores can be used to compare players, although the same argument will still exist that you cannot necessarily compare players from different eras. With this in mind, we begin. In 2002 JOSE CANSECO announced his retirement! Mo Vaughn Promotes Canseco as a Hall of Famer! Does Canseco qualify? To find out, go straight to the rankings - also see how Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., Tim Raines, and others, rate against some of the "greats"! CLICK HERE

(Was this the REAL reason walks were counted as hits for that season, so that Anson could make 3000 "hits" before he retired?) These "hits" are not included here because of the weird rule for that season - although some sites have him listed at 3300 and 3400 or more hits for his career]
