BLUFF COUNTRY SHETLANDS
Quality Shetland Sheep in Minnesota
NASSA Flock #891
Rising from the Ashes in 2007...

Proudly owned by Nancy Krohn
Houston, MN.
In October of 2006, my husband informed me that he had filed for a divorce.
I was sure that I would lose my home and my beloved flock of Shetland sheep. But it was not to be...
In August of 2007, I purchased the property from my ex-husband.
BLUFF COUNTRY SHETLANDS LIVES ON!!!

ATTENTION: As of April 2010, I have a NEW website that features not only my beloved Shetland sheep but also my latest adventure: raising purebred chickens. The new website is much easier for me to update and keep current so it will become my main site, once my membership with this service has expired. PLEASE! Check out my new website at: Bluff Country Shetlands and Backyard Chickens

"SHETLAND SHEEP ARE MORE THAN JUST LIVESTOCK...THEY'RE A LIFESTYLE!"
I can't even begin to describe the sense of joy and peace and serenity that my beloved Shetland sheep have brought into my life.
I hope to share that joy with others by passing on the wonderful qualities that make my flock so very special to me.

so I use it for daily updates on the lambs and other happenings in the Bluff Country.

Located in the beautiful "Yucatan Valley" of Southeastern Minnesota, since 2001,
Bluff Country Shetlands is home to a delightful variety of these hardy, surprisingly friendly little sheep.
Known for their wonderfully soft fleece (a delight for handspinners!), and endearing personalities,
Shetland Sheep are the perfect choice when looking for animals that can be raised on small acreage and require minimum care.
After researching the different breeds of sheep, I decided on Shetlands for three main reasons:
#1) They are small (I am not as YOUNG as I once was!)
#2) They are easy to care for (no 'hi tech' diets and constant intervention, these guys pretty much take care of themselves!)
#3) They are raised for their wool, not their meat (although, rumor has it the meat from Shetlands is far superior to that of "improved" breeds).
Good conformation has always been the number one priority in Bluff Country Shetlands' breeding plan.
In 2004 I decided to add the focus of breeding for spots and a specific marking pattern!
Although excellent conformation and soft fleece will remain top priorities, I will be breeding towards
a particular cluster of markings referred to as: HST: Head/Socks/Tail.
This pattern exhibits white areas on the head, legs (socks) and tail of the animals that carry it.
I LOVE the eye-catching quality of a spotted Shetland, but prefer the solid color fleeces for handspinning....
HST markings give the best of both worlds! Now I'll be focusing on trying to reproduce these striking markings, consistently!

In June, of 2004, I decided to start a web based group for people in Minnesota (and the surrounding areas)
who love Shetland sheep and/or their wonderful fiber. It's a 'just for fun' group where we can chat, share ideas and information
and perhaps make some new friends. Nothing formal...no dues, no board of directors, no 'arm twisting for volunteers'...
just friendly people with a common interest ~ promoting Shetland Sheep in Minnesota!
