Appropriate to her post-punk generation, Detroit poet Elaine Belz, author of three books (zède publishing, Detroit, MI), has had little formal training in writing poetry. However, she has been writing literally as long as she can remember. She credits her education as a poet to her teenage years, spent "voraciously writing, as a way to 'talk over' the disruptive voice" of then-undiagnosed bipolar disorder.

At the same time, she has found both solace and inspiration in music and literature. Early favorite poets included T.S. Eliot, William Blake, Sylvia Plath, and Dylan Thomas, and songwriters such as Terry Taylor and Bruce Cockburn. The title of her third book, To Kiss the Sun and Mean It, is taken from Cockburn's 1971 song, "Dialogue With the Devil," by the kind permission of Golden Mountain Music Corp.

Elaine was born in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a degree in Philosophy and Communication. She currently resides in Detroit.
