What I Do In 4-H

I have shown and sold Turkeys, Ducks, Goats, Lambs, and Chickens.
Here i am with my sister Jamie when i was alot younger showing in the Greenville Open 4-H show.
We don't just show here in Manistee, we like to go to other shows in the state too!
This picture is of me as the class was being let out. I had just won 1st
Place with "Spice" and Jamie won 2nd Place.
Goats are fun ,but i like ducks the best!
We order the ducks from a hatchery. When they get here they need light, heat,
food, and water. They can not go swimming yet because they don't have any oil
on them yet, because they were hatched in a incubator. If the mom hatches them
then they would have some of her oil on them and she would take them swimming
the day after they hatch. Without oil on them they sink and drown!
I think ducks are really cool, But you have to be careful where you put them
because racoons, coyotes, or any other animal can get in a cage or pen
and the ducks may get eaten. And if you keep your ducks safe you And your
ducks will be very happy. =-)
It's hard to tell if they are male or female until they get older. When they get
their feathers , the boy called a "Drake" will have a curl on his back by the tail
and the girl called a "Duck" will talk alot and her bill won't be as orange as
the drake's. AND.... now that they have feathers they can go swimming because
they are making their own oil!!!
So far in showing all the different animals , I have won 15 trophies and 5 Grand
or Reserve Champion plaques! I am the best at poultry of any kind.
It takes a lot of work to raise animals for the fair. You have to exercise lambs everyday.
You have to tame down a calf,goat and other big animals and get them to lead.
Ducks don't need hair cuts for the show like other animals. They clean themselves
for the show if you give them some clean water to swim in. Then we put baby oil
on the bills and feet to make them shiny. We also trim the toe nails so I don't
get scratched if they get scared.
