What is a cast? Return to Top of page

Some fossils are so rare that only 1 of them exist. When the demand to display or own a fossil outnumbers the number of fossils available cast replicas are often the next best thing. A mold is made of the fossil. Then a duplicate is made using that mold. This identical copy is called a cast. The material used to create a cast varies, but we only sell plastic or resin casts. This is because we believe that resin captures the most detail of the original, and it is also more durable (less breakable) than plaster and other materials.

The type of plastic resin used varies based on the manufacturer, as such so does the quality of the cast and its strength. We are always looking for better materials in the casts we produce ourselves. We also "weed out" casts produced by other suppliers that do not hold up to rough handling (such as classroom settings).

It is our goal to offer the best replicas at the best price. If you see something cheaper somewhere else, let us know. We will do our best to match or beat that price.

We also sell real fossils when it is legal and ethical to do so. If you have any questions please ask. If we don't have it we can find it for you. We have access to hundreds of fossil claws, teeth, skulls, and even skeletons not shown on our site. Just let us know what you are looking for.

Production Time Return to Top of page

Production time varies with both the item ordered and the company that produces that item. We will try to provide you with accurate production time on items ordered, but please remember that production time is only an estimate. We can only control the production time of the casts that we produce.

We can not be held liable for delays in production or shipping, customs, etc. If you need something by a certain date please let us know at the time of the order. We will do our best to get it to you by that time. Production time can vary from a few days to several months depending on the size and number of items ordered. It can also vary based on the supplier's current schedule and previous orders received. If you need something for a birthday, Christmas, etc, please order as soon as you can. While most casts are made when ordered, we do try to keep the most popular items in stock (small items like teeth and claws).

Christmas orders Return to Top of page

We will do our best to get all Christmas orders to you in advance of Christmas. It is important that you tell us that you need your items by Christmas at the time of your order. We also receive a lot of University and school orders this same time of year (many of which are not needed until January or later). As a result, we will produce and ship orders specified as Christmas orders first. That being said, please check with us to see if an item is available and can arrive in time of Christmas. Though we keep many items in stock, many items are made at the time of your order and could take several weeks depending on the number of existing orders.

Call us anytime Return to Top of page

We do our best to answer the phone but please keep in mind that some days there may only be one person answering the phones and some times of the day are busier than others. If we are in the midst of production, we may be working with resin or silicone and unable to answer the phone without damaging the item being created. We do our best to return calls within a few minutes.

If you are calling to check on an order we ask that you please Email us if you are able to do so. Please include your order number. We are more than happy to update you on the production and/or shipping status of your order.

Shipping Return to Top of page

We will gladly ship anywhere in the world. Small and medium international items are door-to-door delivery. Extra-large International freight shipments are either door-to-door or door-to-port service. If door-to-port, the carrier will contact the consignee when the shipment has arrived at the destination port or airport for pickup.

Some international countries may charge a legalization fee, broker fees, etc. These duties and taxes are not included in the shipping price and are the responsibility of the customer. We research dozens of shipping companies and select the one that is right for your item and area. We also try our best to use shipping companies that are friendly to our environment.

Variation Return to Top of page

All of our cast replicas are hand-painted. Some variation in color (stains, or paints) may occur from the product pictured. Also sometimes suppliers change the type of stands used. Articulated items can also vary.

Please note that all measurements in item descriptions are approximate. If you need a more specific measurement let us know. We may be able to send you pictures with a ruler or measuring tape next to the item.

Unpainted / unassembled kits Return to Top of page

Unless otherwise stated, casts are sold painted, and assembled. Some of our items are available unpainted/unassembled. In some cases, this may mean seam lines will need to be trimmed. This may also mean holes are unpatched and unfilled. Other holes may need to be drilled. With skeletons or similar assembled items welding may be required.

Damages Return to Top of page

We do our best to safely pack all items. All packages are sent with insurance. If you receive a damaged product it is important that you keep all packing material and contact us as soon as possible. We will file a claim on the damaged item. We may offer a replacement or refund when possible. If the original package is not kept (and all packing material) it will be difficult (or impossible) for the shipping company to issue an insurance claim. In order for the shipping company to process a claim, damaged items must be reported to us within 48hrs of receipt.

We will do our best to expedite a replacement for you as soon as possible.

Return Policy Return to Top of page

This will vary by product, as some items are made by us, and others are produced by other companies. Please contact us for return policy on specific items. If you wish to return an item it must be returned within 10 days of receipt. Some returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee and some items can not be returned.

The cost of shipping the item to you cannot be refunded. In addition, you are responsible for return shipping costs. We are sorry but if a product is a non-stock item or custom designed for you (commissioned pieces) it can not be returned without prior authorization.

Items must be returned in their original condition. We are sorry but if you have painted, or otherwise altered the product it can not be returned.

If an item does need to be returned, please do not use companies like "MailBoxes Etc or "The UPS store". These companies overcharge for shipping costs sometimes over twice the amount as a regular UPS or Post office.

All items being rented or returned MUST be insured against loss or damage. We cannot be responsible for items not insured.

At no time will we refund an item until it is returned and received by us. No exceptions.

On occasion, we import some casts from China. These items are special order items and are typically shipped directly to you. Condition of sale of Chinese items is that they can not be refunded, only exchanged. The good news is that 99% of our casts are made right here in the US and have a much better refund policy. We want only happy customers.

Return of orders made with a "Purchase Order". These items like others can only be returned with approval of TMF. If accepted you are responsible to pay the shipping cost (to you) and also the return shipping cost.

Taylor Made Fossils really helped us out when we were searching for Fossils. They were accommodating and helped us on our search as well as being knowledgeable with the types of dinosaurs we needed to execute our project. Will definitely rent from them again for future projects.
