Some people find themselves in a situation where they have a lot of damaged hair due to something like a perm. They often ask for advice on how to get rid of the damage without cutting off a lot of hair at one time. If you don't want to cut a lot off at one time you can always do small amounts at different times. Let's say your hair is at 20 inches. Let's say the bottom 1/3 is the worst. That would be about 7 inches. What you can do is maintain that length at 20 inches until you get rid of the major damage and then grow from there. Instead of just going and cutting 7 inches off and being stuck with 13 wait for your hair to get to 21 - 22 inches and trim it back to 20. Then wait for 21 - 22 and trim to 20 again. If you do that you can remove the damage and not have to do drastic cuts. Meanwhile everytime you cut off those 1 - 2 inches you will have 1-2 inches of brand new hair at your scalp. I call this growing out gracefully. After you get the worst damage removed you can start growing a little longer before trimming. If you do it this way you won't go any shorter than your hair is now. Below is an illustration I made. If you have questions Email Me and I will help you.

For those of you who are considering
doing this you might want to try these instructions.

Feye's Self Trimming Instructions

Feye has a page with instructions that she came up with for trimming or cutting
your own hair. This is for people with longer hair that can be made into a ponytail.
She has instructions for cutting Straight Across, Different "U" Shapes, and "V" shapes.
I have used her instructions to trim my own hair into a slight "U" shape.
Many others have also tried them and had success as well.
