Some people find themselves in a situation where they have a lot of damaged hair due to something like a perm. They often ask for advice on how to get rid of the damage without cutting off a lot of hair at one time. If you don't want to cut a lot off at one time you can always do small amounts at different times. Let's say your hair is at 20 inches. Let's say the bottom 1/3 is the worst. That would be about 7 inches. What you can do is maintain that length at 20 inches until you get rid of the major damage and then grow from there. Instead of just going and cutting 7 inches off and being stuck with 13 wait for your hair to get to 21 - 22 inches and trim it back to 20. Then wait for 21 - 22 and trim to 20 again. If you do that you can remove the damage and not have to do drastic cuts. Meanwhile everytime you cut off those 1 - 2 inches you will have 1-2 inches of brand new hair at your scalp. I call this growing out gracefully. After you get the worst damage removed you can start growing a little longer before trimming. If you do it this way you won't go any shorter than your hair is now. For those of you who are considering doing this you might want to try these instructions.
Feye has a page with instructions that she came up with for trimming or cutting your own hair. This is for people with longer hair that can be made into a ponytail. She has instructions for cutting Straight Across, Different "U" Shapes, and "V" shapes. I have used her instructions to trim my own hair into a slight "U" shape. Many others have also tried them and had success as well.
