Temples of Kollur to Visit as Part of Pilgrimage Journey


Kollur is a beautiful town that is located in the base of the Kodachadri peak of the Western Ghats. It lies about 130 kms from Mangalore and is located on River Sauparnika’s banks. Kollur is an important pilgrimage destination in Karnataka and it is one of seven pilgrimage centers built by Sage Parasuraman for Goddess Parvati.

This village attracts worshippers of Shakti and it has numerous temples which are dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The best time to visit is between the months of October and March when the climate is pleasant.


Temples to Visit in Kollur

  • Mookambika Temple – It is a magnificent and ancient temple that is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Here she is worshipped as Maha kali in the morning, Maha Lakshmi in Noon and Maha Saraswati in the evening.
  • Veerabadhra Swamy Shrine – This is a shrine that is in the outer parikrama of Mookambika temple. It is dedicated to Lord Veerabadhra and it is believed that a visit to the Mookambika temple is not complete without offering puja in this shrine.

  • Kukke Subramanian Temple – This is a beautiful shrine that is dedicated to Lord Karthikeyan, the lord of serpents. It is here that Vasuki and other serpents took refuge when they were threatened by Garuda. Various pujas are performed here to avoid sarpa dosha.
  • Saraswati Mantap – This shrine is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. The place comes alive during the Saraswatoi pooja festival. It is important to visit for those who strive to excel in their education and want to take up further higher courses in their field of study.
  • Chowdeswari temple – This temple is situated inside the Mookambika temple and the deity Kshetra Palani is beautifully adorned with ornaments and flowers. It is said that the deity posses mystical powers to fulfill the wishes of devotees.  
  • Balmuri ganesha Temple – It s dedicated to Lord Ganesha and the idol of the lord is made from marble. The temple comes alive during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. The shrine is situated outside the Mookambika temple.
