Taking CLEP exams while homeschooling high school has numerous advantages for the homeschool student. Some colleges will take the CLEP and some won't. Some will take them in ranging degrees. There can be advantages with any of them. One thing to remember is to choose your colleges wisely. For example, Seattle Pacific University will take a whole year of college by CLEP. Each time we passed a CLEP it represented many thousands of dollars to us. Not only that, even though we did not wind up using those CLEPs, they still gained us fantastic scholarships.
At first we were taking CLEP exams so they wouldn't have to pay for four full years of college. But ultimately it freed us up to be able to get that good scholarship. My boys did wind up attending college for four years. They just enjoyed it more since they were qualified to be put into classes even when they would not necessarily get college credit for passing a CLEP in that subject.
The complicated point about CLEP is that there is not a national policy. Every college has its own policy on if they accept CLEP or not, what scores they take, as well as how they implement them if they DO accept them. That makes it really difficult to write about. In other words, one college can give you college credit AS WELL AS give you advance placement. Another college might not use the scores whatsoever, and may still demand an AP in the same exact subject area.
Regardless of knowing how to home school whether you are looking at CLEP, AP or SAT 2 for high school testing you will want to make sure that your student is able to pass the test before you step foot in the door. You will want to give them a sample test, whether a general sample test, such as a general CLEP exam or perhaps a specific subject test such as in Chemistry. Give it to them when they are at home and where they are comfortable. Make sure that everything is going well so that you can make sure that they are likely to pass it before you take it for real.
