Driving your truck rental in Montreal: Dos and Don’ts

Driving in Montreal is always challenging. For starters, unlike most of Quebec, you can’t turn right on a red.  You’ll often times run into series of one-way streets that make getting from point A to point B a time consuming and often confusing process.

On top those challenges, you’ve rented a big truck for your Montreal move, and now you have to pick it up pack it, get it from your old residence to your new one, unpack it, and then take it back to your rental company.  All the while you have to learn how to drive a Montreal rental truck that you may have no experience with.

When renting a truck for your Montreal move, there are certain things you should and should not do.

DO

1.    Do a dry run:

Before moving day, scout out the trip that you will have to make from your old residence to your new one. This will make handling your rental truck in Montreal much easier. First, use a program such as Google Maps to map out your route. Then, with and friends or family that will perhaps drive the Montreal rental truck, actually drive the route. Check to see if there is any construction that may cause changes in your route. Are the streets big enough to get your truck through?

2.    Check for parking:

Is there ample parking in front of both your old residence and your new one to move your goods?  If not, what is your contingency plan for getting your rental truck as close as possible to your new Montreal residence?

3.    Be a considerate and cautious driver:

On the actual moving day, when you’ll be driving your rental truck across Montreal, be as considerate and cautious as possible. Not only are you responsible for any damages that you may cause to your Montreal truck rental, you may end up having to pay the deductible for another person’s vehicle.

DON’T

1.    Break Laws:

That one-way street is a pain in the butt? Don’t try to cut corners by driving your rental truck the wrong way down a Montreal street. Not only could you cause accidents, the Montreal police will be more than happy to give you a ticket. Also, when parking your rental truck, be aware of Montreal municipal rules regarding parking. Don’t block a fire hydrant or park where you are not supposed to.

2.    Forget to respect your rental contract:

Your Montreal truck rental contract may indicate that you have to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas, return it at a specific time, or indicate that you cannot smoke in the vehicle. Respect the Montreal truck rental contract, and your move will be much more enjoyable.
