DC Metro Area First Anarchs-Legal
Constructed V:TES Tournament

Fourteen people came out to Chantilly, Virginia to play in the DC area's first Anarchs-legal constructed tournament Saturday, July 19, 2003.

One game nearly timed out (within about fifteen seconds) in the first round, but after that everything seemed to move along rather quickly, and we were ultimately finished by 7:30 pm (very fast for four rounds, with an "actual" start time more like 12:45 than the 12:00 goal).

Here are the final rankings:

Sam was actually playing a deck he'd borrowed from me, never (as far as I know) having seen it before. Obviously, he did quite well with it. (It was a Zillah's Valley/Parity Shift vote deck with the Obf/Pre/Dom/For voters.)

Seating in the finals was:

Sam Ntonme, Zillah's/Parity Shift vote
Colin Riggs, The Baron + Eye of Hazimel + multi-rush/bleed for 3
Huan Vu, Lasombra bleedy deck (? - didn't see it do much this game)
Jason Babbitt, Pot rush deck with some Dom bleed
Joshua Duffin, Salubri bleed deck with Spirit Marionettes

My deck was sort of a reworking of my old "Spirit Marionette people and burn then" deck, with no burning (dropped the For skill cards and Daring the Dawns) and more bleed (put in Dom masters for the Salubri and for people I'd want to steal who didn't already have Dom). Worked well in the prelims - I'd have had one more VP except that I failed to properly Accept a Gambit and lost an "earned" VP to being ousted by Colin third round, after spending 18 pool to get Blanche Hill twice (after the first copy was burned; Matthias was in play both times...), but in the finals Jason showed me how bad consistent rush can be for it, and Sam showed me how useless Repulsion is against lots of Second Traditions.

Meanwhile, Colin didn't draw the Baron in his opening four, and by the time he got him out, Sam had already reduced him to about five pool, meaning Colin couldn't even afford to get the Eye, let alone do anything with it before being ousted. Huan had also fallen victim to Jason's rushing; Gratiano got Disarmed and then burned before he even got to take an action, I believe. So Sam ousted Colin and then Huan while Jason ousted me, then Sam had some chance of winning, but he would have had to draw either Secure Haven or more Obedience.

Congratulations to Jason on his victory! Here's his winning decklist.
