Heroes Among Us

Thank God for all the heroes
whose mission is so true
Who in this time of crisis
will strive to see us through

So many helped coworkers
and those they didn't know
Some carried them through smoke-filled stairs
to safety far below

The firefighters and police
who time and time again
While citizens were rushing out
so bravely rushed back in

The valiant people on the plane
who despite their fear
Fought back to save still others
and our House so dear

To all the volunteers
risking their own lives
For the chance however small
to find someone alive

and there will be more heroes
in the trying times ahead
They'll sacrifice for others
although they're filled with dread

I pray for God's assistance
And from deep within my heart
I ask that when I'm tested
He'll help me do my part

Engine 28 firefighter Mike Kehoe, from Staten Island, assists in the evacuation effort in a stairwell of Tower One Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 during the attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York. These pictures were shot by John Labriola who had an office on the 71st floor of the building. He escaped with no injuries. Fellow firefighter Bobby Annunziato at Engine 28 in Manhattan said Kehoe escaped before the towers collapsed. (AP Photo/John Labriola) NO SALES
