Equipment should be suitable for the activity and the environment in which it is to be used and generally conform to current accepted standards.

 

The equipment must be capable of resisting the worst weather anticipated since, in the event of a serious deterioration in conditions, safety may well depend on it being able to withstand the prevailing conditions.

 

The group must carry all equipment and food to be used during the venture.  All individuals must always carry the personal emergency equipment lists.

Essential equipment

Every participant of the award will need to have a three season sleeping bag which is of light weight and compacts into a small bag.

Essential equipment

Every participant needs somewhere to sleep. The tents should be carried and shared out equally between a maximum of 4 people and a minimum of 2 people. The tents are provided for you but you are welcome to bring your own light weight tent if you would prefer.

65litre bag        Essential equipment

Every participant needs a 65litre bag. The contence of the bag should be a third of your weight maximum any heavier you will struggle to carry it and find walking hard.

There are many bags of this capacity around ranging from £40 to £200 it is up to you if you want to borrow a bag from your center or buy your own. There are two types of bags, Female bags and Male bags. The only difference between them is that there is more support around the shoulders and back for women.

It is up to you whether you bring hats and gloves but especially in the winter months and at evening it can get very cold so having  hats and gloves are a recommended piece of kit.

Compass, maps and whistles are essential pieces of kit. You will be told how to use a compass and should carry one at all times. It is used to help you take bearings of where you are if you get lost and is used to help you follow your route. A map is very essential as you need it to find you way around your route. A whistle is used if you get lost and can not find your way. You whistle twice and wait for a response. If no response try again.

A first Aid kit is the most essential piece of kit. It should meet the requirements and have  everything you need in it. A flare is a good idea to carry but is usually used for mountain walkers who walk up into the mountains. If you get lost or need emergency help you light the flare and hope someone sees its. Although you probably wont need a flare for the expeditions it is a good idea to carry one just in case.

It is best to carry water purifier tablets as you never know when you might run out of water and need to drink from a stream, river etc. All you have to do is drop the tablets in the water and wait for it to dissolve. Always read the instructions as many products vary.

 

Essential equipment

A cooker is essential to take with you if you want to have hot food. You will also need to have Billy cans as well to cook the food in. To light the cooker you will need to take matches with you which will need to be wrapped in a plastic bag to keep them dry.

You can take any type of food with you but the food which is recommended for long walks are the boil in a bag packet foods. They are  nutritious and full of energy to keep you going.

 

Non- essential equipment

A torch is a non essential piece of kit but is very recommended as it is easier to see in the dark etc.
