Service

Aim of the service is to encourage service to individuals to the community in which they live.

Principles

The service section is to teach participants that as being of a member of the community you have responsibilities to each other and that voluntary help is needed everywhere to keep your community tidy and is a friendly and safe environment.

Benefits

The service section should provide opportunities to:-

Make personal contributions
Appreciate the needs of others and help their well being
Trust and be trusted
Understand your personal strengths and weaknesses
Increase individual self esteem
Overcome fear and prejudice
Encourage positive action in the community
Become more responsible

Within the service section there is the opportunity for you to do/ try out new activities. This includes all of the fallowing and a lot more.

Child care
Dance leadership
Visiting children in care
Community care
First aid
Home nursing
Visit elderly or disabled

Expedition

The aim of the expedition is to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery.

The expedition involves: -

Shared responsibilities throughout the group
Shared leadership within the group
Determination
Co-operation between the group
Being careful and responsible when walking in the chosen environment

Duration of time, which each section of the award takes to do.

Bronze: -

Duration- 2 days, 1 night

Activity time– 6 hours min of walking per day

24km / 15miles

Silver; -

Duration – 3 days, 2 nights

Activity time – 7 hours min of walking per day

Walking distance – 48km / 30 miles

Gold: -

Duration – 4 days, 3 nights

Activity time – min of 8 hours walking per day

Walking distance – 80km / 50 miles

Training

To make your expeditions as enjoyable as possible you need to make sure that th

environment which you are walking in is safe that you are not going to get in to any visible danger. The precautions, which you need to fallow, are: -

First aid and emergency procedures
Health and safety
Navigation and route planning are accurate
Food hygiene
Observations the walking environment
Team building exercises are important as if you get into trouble you need someone to turn too.
Learn the country and highway code

 

For your expeditions having the right kit is an essential. You need to have all below kit to make sure that you do the walk to the best of your ability. Without the kit you will run into all sorts of problems!!!!

EXPEDITION KIT LIST

• 1x pair Walking Boots (broken in)
• 1x pair Walking Socks
• 1x Thermal top / tee shirt
• 1x Shirt
• 1x Sweater (woolen or fleece)
• 1x Walking trousers (warm; NOT jeans)

Personal Kit (to carry)
• 1x Large Rucksack (approximately 55-65litre capacity)
• 2x Strong, large plastic bags (to line your rucksack)
• 1x Sleeping mat
• 1x Sleeping bag (in a waterproof bag)
• 1x Sleeping bag inner (optional)
• 1x Survival bag
• 1x Personal First Aid Kit
• 1x Watch
• 1x Whistle
• Maps
• Small quantity of money (optional)
• 1x Notebook & pen/pencil
• 1x Torch & spare battery (e.g. small Maglite or head torch)
• 1x Emergency food rations (NOT to be eaten until the end!)
• 1x Water bottle (e.g. Sigg or strong plastic, to hold 1 to 2 liters)
• 1x Knife, fork, spoon
• 1x Pocket Knife (small)
• 1x Plate/bowl
• 1x Mug
• 1x Box of matches (sealed in a dry container or bag)
• 1x Wash kit (small)
• 1x Towel (small)
• 1x Cagoule/coat (it must be waterproof and windproof)
• 3x pairs Underwear
• 2x pairs Walking socks

• 1x Shirt (woolen, cotton or fleece)
• 1x Spare sweater (woolen or fleece)

Skill

Aim of the Skills section is to encourage the development of personal interests, social and practical skills.

The Principles

The skill section should encourage young people to take part in new activities within a wide range of practical, cultural and social environments. This section offers young people a wide choice depending upon their personal preferences, abilities and the opportunities available. This section allows the participant to experience new skills or to pursue a skill all ready learnt.

Benefits to Young People

Although the specific benefits to young people depend on the choice made, the Skills Section should provide opportunities to:

Experience or learn new skills
Make new friends
Encourage positive experiences
Increase self esteem 
Be motivated 
Have fun while doing your skill

Physical

Aim of the Physical Recreation Section is to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity.

 

The Principles

 

The physical recreation section offers a wide range of programmes which can be chosen by you. It gives the participant the chance to try out new physical activities or to pursue an activity all ready familiar to the them. There are a selection of activities which the participant and choose from and any other physical activity which aren't on the list may be used as well as long as there is a qualified and police cleared instructor.

 

Benefits to Young People

 The physical section should give you the opportunity to:-

Be involvement in some form of enjoyable physical activity that is essential for  physical well-being
To give a sense of achievement and satisfaction 
To take part in a  physical challenge
To participate in sports which are enjoyable in themselves and can lead to the establishment of a lasting active lifestyle
Promote the opportunity to make a choice, then discuss  and agree a personal programme of participation and achievement with other members.
Enjoy keeping fit by choosing an activity which is in itself enjoyable, and which leads to the establishment of a lasting, active lifestyle
Improve fitness by taking part in a physical activity on a regular basis
Discover new abilities through participation
Raise self-esteem through improvement of performance and reaching  the minimum requirements
