History

French overseas territory (colony)

One of the French West Indies. Visited by Columbus in 1493. It was inhabited by Caribs. Settled by French in 1635. The island was occupied by the British 1810-16. Capital Basse-Terre. A dependency is the French part of St Martin in the Netherlands Antilles, another is St Barthelemy. There is an independence movement but the French intend to keep the island as it is.
