The City walls & Westgate

The city walls

The city walls once surrounded the whole city of Canterbury. There's a
pedestrian walkway on parts of the wall. (battlement views)

The first walls around Canterbury were built by the Romans in the 3rd century A.D. to protect the new settlement from raids from the continent. The first wall, made of flint, was about 10 metres high and 2 metres thick. It enclosed the town and the community lived within the walls burying their dead only outside the walls. Seven gates were used to enter the town. When the Romans left the wall fell into decay.

The present walls were built in the Middle Ages on top of the Roman foundations. They were renovated in the 14th century and consist of flint and stone to give them strength. The wall had 21 bastions (some with gun slots) and six entrances : the Northgate, Newingate, Westgate, Worthgate, Ridingate, Burgate. Much of the wall was destroyed and of the gates only the Westgate remains.

The Westgate

What? It's a defence gate. We can see this because there are cants. The builing is 15 meters high and huge.

When? It built in the 12th century.

Who? The gate works very simple. When there is danger the iron gate goes down, also when evening comes.

In former days? The old town Canterbury was circular and easy to defend because, there were walls and on some places water.

In this days? Now the Westgate tower is a museum. The museum shows the former Westgate on a display, the civil war armoury, murder holes,...
