The history of Norman castle

After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Duke William of Normandy could take over Canterbury without a problem. The inhabitants didn't offer any resistance to Duke William.

To show his power he built 3 castles: one in Dover, one in Canterbury and one in Rochester.

The Castle in Canterbury is named Canterbury Castle ( because it's situated in Canterbury) or Norman Castle ( because it was built by Duke William of Normandy).

The Norman Castle was built in wood, against the town wall of a Roman village.

The rebuilding of Norman Castle.

In 1086 they replaced the wooden wall of the castle by a stone wall.

In 1090 they started the construction of a new, stone castle.
The new castle was completed in 1120, so they built it for 30 years.

There were 3 floors in the castle:
- The ground floor with one stairway.
- The first floor with a hall, 3 rooms and a kitchen.
- The second floor with the private rooms.
- The cellar that was first used for storage and later for a prison.
(There were only 3 little windows.)

  The presentation.

Here you see us doing our presentation about Norman castle.

What did we do??????

We had to be at school at 6 o'clock, most of the pupils were very tired. About two hours later we were on the boat on our way to Dover. We arrived in Dover one hour and a half later. Then we went with the bus  to visit some churches and little villages. At about 6 o'clock we were in the youth hostel, where we had our rooms and unpacked our bags. Before we had dinner we went to our location where we could find more information for guiding the day after. Then we had dinner, we had fish, beans and French fries. We went to our rooms in group to prepare our presentation. We went to sleep at 11 o' clock. Some pupils couldn't sleep. The next day we had breakfast, it was not a traditional English breakfast: beans in red sauce and sausage, bacon and eggs but also toast and things the most pupils liked. Then we had to clean up our room.
After all the rooms were clean, we went to the cathedral with the complete group. We had to fill in a questionnaire about the cathedral. Then every group had to guide another group. We had a few hours that we were free to shop and to enjoy the beautiful weather. It was about 4 or 5 o'clock and we were back on the bus. We made a wonderful walk on the white cliffs, that was really beautiful nature, it was hard but we enjoyed it because the view was amazing!!! It was the best place to take pictures. At about 6.30 p.m.  we were  back on the boat on our way home. Some were sad because they had to go back home, but also pupils that wanted to be home as fast as possible. When we arrived back at school, every one had two wonderful days, which we'll never forget.
