After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Duke William of Normandy could take over Canterbury without a problem. The inhabitants didn't offer any resistance to Duke William. To show his power he built 3 castles: one in Dover, one in Canterbury and one in Rochester. The Castle in Canterbury is named Canterbury Castle ( because it's situated in Canterbury) or Norman Castle ( because it was built by Duke William of Normandy). The Norman Castle was built in wood, against the town wall of a Roman village.
In 1086 they replaced the wooden wall of the castle by a stone wall.
In 1090 they started the construction of a new,
stone castle. There were 3 floors in the castle:
We had to be at school at 6 o'clock, most of the
pupils were very tired. About two hours later we were on the boat on our way to
Dover. We arrived in Dover one hour and a half later. Then we went with the
bus to visit some churches and little villages. At about 6 o'clock we were
in the youth hostel, where we had our rooms and unpacked our bags. Before we had
dinner we went to our location where we could find more information for guiding
the day after. Then we had dinner, we had fish, beans and French fries. We went
to our rooms in group to prepare our presentation.
We went to sleep at 11 o' clock. Some pupils couldn't sleep. The next day we had
breakfast, it was not a traditional English breakfast: beans in red sauce and
sausage, bacon and eggs but also toast and things the most pupils liked. Then we
had to clean up our room.

In our free time in Canterbury we went shopping and
we had a lot of fun!
