Andrew Erkenbrecher: Andrew was a German immigrant notable for founding the Cincinnati Zoo. He was an enthusiastic amateur ornithologist who proposed to the community that they could deal with the plague of caterpillars that had descended on the city in 1872, by importing insect eating birds. Once the birds were accustomed to the environment, they could be released and eat the caterpillars. When the birds were sussessfully released, he suggested that the city organize a local zoo. The zoo open in 1875 with Erkenbrecker's bird collection as its prize exhibit. (from Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum Tour Trivia)
