5. Joshia2
Faylor (John W1) was born November 18, 1839
in Grundy County, IL1, and died July 27, 1906
in Guerneville, CA. He married Mary Jane Aland.
Notes for Joshia Faylor:

Josiah Faylor rode for the Pony Express out of the Willow
Springs Station in the Utah Territory in 1860. Richard Burton
passed through Willow Springs August 17, 1860, and describes it
as follows, "The express rider was a handsome young Mormon,
who wore in his felt hat the effigy of a sword; his wife was an
Englishwoman . . ."
Josiah was married to Mary Jane Aland (born in England,
October 30, 1837). She came to the United States as a Morman
immigrant in 1854. Willow Springs was very isolated and she was
frequently frightened when left alone while Josiah was on his
rides. When he came in from his Pony Express rides in winter, he
would have icicles in his red beard. Once when the Indians were
about and Mary was alone and afraid, she put hats and caps on
sticks and placed these near the windows so the natives would
think the men were at home. Their first child was born November
23, 1861, in Kamas City, Summit County, Utah.
Josiah and family finally settled in Sonoma County,
California. After settling in Sonoma County, it is family
folklore that in 1879 he and (Janice Stenger's) great uncle Sam,
who was none at the time took the train to San Francisco. Josiah
supposedly put Sam on the train for home and disappeared for
seven years. There is speculation that he heard of some gold or
silver strike and took off to pursue that endeavor.
Information provided by Janice Faylor Stenger, April 1997.

1850 IL Census Town of Mazon, dwelling 55: Sarah Faylor age 2

provide conclusive proof that John and Elizabeth are the parents
of Sarah. There are two other children enumerated on the census,
Alfred age 20, and Samuel age 17. Fifteen years between Samuel
and Sarah. Possible Sarah is a grandchild. William (Sarah's
brother) is NOT listed, but was less than one month old at the

9. Wlliam Leslie2
Faylor (John W1)4 was
born October 13, 1850 in Grundy County, IL, and died September
28, 1914 in Eureka, Greenwood County, KS5. He
married Malinda Elizabeth Chambers December 27,
1874 in Greenwood County, KS.
Notes for Wlliam Leslie Faylor:
William's obituary states he ran away from home in Grundy
Couny IL to be a "Drummer Boy" in the Civil War. Family
lore presents an even more colorful, and probably more accurate
account. John Faylor, son of Homer O. Faylor, tells us the story
told to him by Margaret Allan Branson at a family reunion in
August 1995:
William's departure from his Grundy County homestead was a
question of pride. "It was costumary in those days to
'pickett' the livestock overnight in a meadow. Early one morning
John Wesley Faylor sent young William to bring the horses for
harnessing. William returned shortly and reported that the horses
were gone. Evidence strongly suggested that marauding Indians had
taken them during the night. The father was aggravated by the
delay this would cause in the day's work, and vented his
irritation with corporal punishment; then he told the lad to go
and find the horses and not come home without them. Young William
realized that trying to recover them was useless, so he walked
away and did not return. Fortunately, he met up with a contingent
of Union soldiers that allowed him to travel with them."
William came to Greenwood County about 1870, locating on a
homestead 11 miles northwest of Eureka and lived there until
about 1899 when he moved his family to Eureka. There were
thirteen children, one died in infancy.
Claimed homestead in NW/4 31-24-10 east, Greenwood County KS.
Dennis S. Walker witnessed the claim. William owned Fall River
Nursery which advertised "5000 Apple Trees ready this
Fall" June 13, 1878 in the Eureka Herald.
William died of a heart attack while chasing a runaway calf
across a field. He was on the way home from his daughter's,
Myrtle Allan.
The funeral was at the Methodist church, conducted by a Rev.
E.T. Rice.
