Material List for Construction
of the Wooden Sluice and Water Wheel

1. The material to construct the wooden sluice box is as follows:

Wooden Sluice Box is 350 feet long.

  • 2" X 12" white oak boards for sides and bottom - 2650 linear feet.
  • 3/8" X 3" white oak splines to join together boards - 1855 linear feet.
  • 4" X 4" white oak frames for around the sluice box - 1602 linear feet.
  • 150 linear feet of dowel rods to join mortise joints on frames together.
  • 6" X 8" white oak frames for the water box - 54 linear feet.
  • 8" X 8" white oak beams for sluice box lintels - 530 linear feet.
  • 8" X 8' white oak frames for head gates - 36 linear feet.
  • 1" X 4" strips of wood for two trash racks - 400 linear feet.
  • 2" X 4" wood for trash rack frames - 60 linear feet.
  • 3" X 12" white oak boards for three gates - 55 linear feet.
  • 1" X 3" white oak splines for the three gates - 55 linear feet.
  • Tubes of water proof caulking material.
  • 2. Plus miscellaneous metal and wooden material to construct gate control arms, sluice box piers & braces, flash boards, bolts, nuts, washers, eye bolts, etc., and threaded rods and covered with round wooden plugs which hold gates together. Sheet metal and metal rods to construct the chute.

    3. The following material is to construct a 20' diameter by 42 inch wide overshot water wheel which has 60 elbow buckets that would be bolted to an iron hub. All wood is "clear" seasoned white oak. Cypress wood can be used in place of the white oak for the water wheel buckets and or the drum boards.
  • 20 pieces 3" X 8" X 10' for the arms of water wheel.
  • 20 pieces 1" X 20" X 65" for the felloe boards.
  • 80 pieces 2 1/2" X 20" X 75" for the shroud or rim boards and the cants.
  • 60 pieces 1 1/2" X 12" X 37" for front board of elbow bucket.
  • 60 pieces 1 1/2" X 5" X 37" for bottom of elbow bucket.
  • 120 pieces 1" X 6" X 42" for sole or drum boards.
  • 120 pieces 1" X 2" X 42" for batten on the sole or drum boards.
  • 4. The metal parts required for the wooden water wheel is as follows:
  • 130 foot length of 1/8" X 6" metal for shroud or rim plates (2).
  • 10 tie rods 1"dia. X 45" long with threaded ends, nuts and washers.
  • 216 carriage bolts 1" dia. X 6" long, nuts and washers.
  • 60 bolts, nuts, and washers to hold arms onto hubs.
  • Cut nails, and carriage bolts 1" dia. X 12" to hold the metal shroud or rim plate to rim of water wheel (approximately 18" apart).
