Ungkas are an original 3-piece band from South Australia. Their music is a diverse combination of modern heavy sounds incorporating elements of groove, funk, melody and harmony. Ungkas create a huge energetic sound that must be witnessed at one of their exciting live shows where they incorporate body paint and fire eating.

Ungkas members include Simon Bowen - drums, Jett Young - bass/vocals and Karl Roberts - guitar/vocals. Special guest 'Shakra' also appears at some of the live Ungkas shows, where she performs fire eating and dancing.

In the short time that Ungkas have been together they have already achieved much success. Their debut EP 'Escape' has toped the SAMIA charts.

Ungkas played mainstage at the Falls Festival, New Years Eve 2001, after winning out of 89 bands in the Advertiser/Three D radio competition. They got to play along side such acts Superheist, Grinspoon, 28 days, John Butler Trio, Regurgitator, Resin Dogs and Body Jar.

In October of 2001 Ungkas played at Stoneyfest in Canbera, alongside Skunkhour, One Dollar Short, Area 7 and The Cruel Sea.

Ungkas have played shows in NSW, VIcotria and Tasmania and supported interstate acts such as Motor Ace, You Am I, Muzzy Pep and Frankenbok.

Ungkas won the 2001 Campus Band Competition. They competed against 980 bands and are the first band from South Australia to win this competition in 10 years. The competition has spawned careers for bands such as Jebediah, 78 Saab and Eskimo Joe.

Ungkas were winners of the South Australian Band/Young Artist Music Competition (Section 1 - metal, punk, hard rock) sponsored by Riffind Music, Rip it Up magazine, Jack Lives Here and Disc Edits.

Ungkas were the winners in the Expose Yourself Music Competition 2000. As first prize, they won a 10 hour recording session with The House of South Australian Productions (House of SAP) and released their first demo CD.
