Jay-Z & LeBron James: Roc-A-Family - 07.16.2003
MTV.com

It's all about competition for Jay-Z. His mantra is, after all, "I will not lose." That applies to performing on his current Rock the Mic Tour, making sure his upcoming last LP, The Black Album, is a classic, and winning a championship with the team he puts out on the basketball court.

H-to-the-izzo has his own squad entered into the famed Rucker Park basketball tournament this summer in New York's Harlem neighborhood. And while in past years captains such as Fat Joe and Irv Gotti have called upon a bevy of NBA all-stars like Stephon Marbury and Baron Davis to be on their teams, Jay plans to go all the way this year with somebody who has never played an official pro game — highly hyped #1 draft pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers, rookie point guard LeBron James.

The pairing of the ballas may seem like the ultimate business arrangement, but the two insist it's all for the love. Jay and LeBron are actually friends who hang out when time permits.

Sway and the MTV News crew caught up with Hova and the guy that sports fans are calling the second coming of Michael Jordan (L.J. even wears #23 like M.J.) as Rock the Mic stopped off near James' hometown of Cleveland. ...

Sway: What brings you to the concert?

LeBron James: Come on, man, you know what brings me to the concert, this man sitting right here next to me. You know I'm part of the Roc, so I'm here supporting my man.

Sway: Now when you say you're a part of the Roc — are you signed to Roc-A-Fella or are you just a Roc fan?

Jay-Z: That's extended family right there.

James: And coming soon, you gon' see me in the Roc jersey at the Rucker too.

Sway: He's gonna play on the Roc-A-Fella streetball team?

Jay-Z: Oh, you better be very, very afraid out there.

Sway: You stacking them chips right now there, Jay.

Jay-Z: I just wanna show people a good time. They wanna see it, you know what I'm saying, they wanna see him play out there. That's what people come to Rucker for, it's a different atmosphere. It's not like the NBA. You can't believe the energy and the atmosphere out there.

Sway: I think Fat Joe's steaming in his boots right now.

Jay-Z: Eh, he not even in our bracket, he gotta make the championship game before he even talk to me (laughs). That's real talk.

Sway: OK, LeBron, so you ready for the league?

James: Yeah, I think so. Me and my teammates are just trying to get real acquainted with our new coaching system. Me being the new point guard, trying to run the team, I think we'll be pretty good. We gonna shock a lot of people this year.

Sway: I can't think of another time a young man has had so much pressure on him and the weight of the world on his shoulders to perform. How do you think that's going to affect your play once the season actually starts?

James: I don't think it's gonna affect me a lot. I've just been playing my game and that's what brought the media and everything, so if I keep doing that I'ma keep bringing 'em.

Sway: Who are you looking forward to pairing up against? Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady ...

James: I'm prepared to play against the NBA, the Cavs vs. whoever we got that night. We trying to make the playoffs and individual things mean nothing, it's all about the team.

Jay-Z: That's why I love him. He do what he do. He takes care of his business, he works hard and everything is love. He got God-given talent.

Sway: Shaq, Kobe, Chris Webber and a few other NBA players have taken a stab at making rap records. I see you hanging with Jay and he's the dude ... is there a chance that you may be making an album?

James: No, there's no chance. No chance at all.

Sway: Ever?

James: I'm God-gifted in one thing, and that's basketball. I'ma let my man [Jay] handle the other side.

Sway: That's a good thing, man, because it doesn't always work out.

Jay-Z: Yo, Shaq went platinum every time, don't front on my boy!

Sway: OK, 'cause people thought you were going to be signing something with Def Jam. Or maybe they was gonna be marketing LeBron James — that's not a possibility?

James: Naw, no possibility.

Jay-Z: It's real family, and that's my boy right there. It's just that, you know, rap artists and basketball players, we joined at the hip anyway, so ...

Sway: It goes hand in hand.

Jay-Z: That's what I'm saying. But that's my family, on a real level.

Jay-Z Can Relate To Beanie Sigel's Quest To Give Up Street Life - 07.15.2003
MTV.com

Jay-Z isn't turning his back on the legally entangled Beanie Sigel as his signee remains in custody. In addition to trying to help him, he says that Beanie's woes remind him of how difficult it was for him to leave the streets behind when he first began his quest for a rap career.

"I have talks with Beans and anytime somebody is trying to leave something else alone, that's the most difficult time in your life," Jay said on Friday at the Akron, Ohio, stop of the Rock the Mic Tour. "I know — I went through it."

On Monday at a federal detention hearing in Philadelphia where Beanie was denied bail, Jay even spoke up for his friend in hopes that the judge would let Beans post a bond. It was to no avail, however; the judge maintained his position. Still, Jay is staying optimistic about his friend's fate.

"Whenever you're trying to transition and make everything right, it gets harder," he explained. "You're at a disadvantage because you're not of that no more. It's just real difficult to make that transition. It's like God's test. Once [he passes] that test, he's gonna be all right."

Jay-Z resumes his stint onstage Tuesday (July 15) as the Rock the Mic Tour picks back up in Moline, Illinois. Sigel was traveling with the outing until he was arrested last week by ATF agents for being a felon in possession of a firearm, stemming from an April 20 arrest.

Sigel, who had been arrested July 3 on attempted murder charges, had been out free on bail up until that point. With his bail being officially denied on Monday by the judge and the Roc-A-Fella family leaving the tour on August 5, it is unlikely that fans going to the road show will get to see him perform.

Rock The Mic Tour Extended, But Without Jay-Z - 07.10.2003
MTV.com

Jay-Z is putting his mic down, but 50 Cent won't get off the stage until at least the end of August.

Thirteen more dates have been added to the Rock the Mic tour, during which we'll see Young Hova bow out and hip-hop's most diesel fan favorite step in as the show's only headliner.

Jay and the Roc will exit Rock the Mic when it was originally supposed to end on August 5, but the hip-hop road show now won't see a final curtain until August 21 in Detroit. Snoop Dogg, Fabolous, Busta Rhymes, Sean Paul, Obie Trice and Bone Crusher, who already have spots in the current version of the tour, will all continue to interchange as openers.

Rock the Mic starts its second leg on August 7 in Tampa, Florida, at the St. Petersburg Times Forum.

Jay-Z Working On Nabbing Prince, 50 Cent For Black Album - 7/2/2003
MTV.com

The fans standing on line down 125th Street in Harlem on Monday were throwing up the diamond signs with their hands and letting out cries of "The Roc is in the building!" and "Brooooklyn!" The borough's biggest name, Jay-Z, had traveled uptown for an autograph signing to promote the two new versions of his S. Carter Collection kicks.

Sneakers, a record label and clothing line that have become staples in the hip-hop community, and a new club — Jay has almost done it all. There's two more things on his list of goals that he wants to accomplish, though. One is making an impact in Hollywood and the other is working with a purple-wearing music legend.

"I'm trying to get a song on there with Prince, then I'm good," Hov disclosed of his plans for his next and supposedly last LP, The Black Album. "I [worked with] Michael Jackson [before], I got that one done. So for Prince to be the last one, I'mma be good."

Jay, who resumes the Rock the Mic Tour with 50 Cent on Wednesday (July 2), says that he's just four songs into The Black Album and he'll be recording on the road. Of the four tracks in the can, he says he's not sure how many of those will make the album, but he's positive that a cut he did with producer Rick Rubin will be featured.

"I wanna make it a prequel to Reasonable Doubt, I want it to feel like that," Jay, seated next to Memphis Bleek, continued to explain. "It's gonna be 12 songs with 12 of the producers I respect. One from Timbaland, one from Dr. Dre, one from the Neptunes, one from Eminem." Besides the possibility of having Prince appear, Jay said his Rock the Mic co-headliner, 50 Cent, may also pop up on the record. Jigga smiled about The Black Album being his last LP after saying that he was 99 percent sure it would be his swan song. "Nobody believes me, huh?" he said. While one career ends, another one could very well commence, because Jay says he's taking his act to Hollywood.

"I didn't come into the rap game just to be a rapper, I came to be a CEO. I didn't want to go into the movie business just to be an actor, I want to write scripts, produce, direct. Whatever house I mess with, they gotta give me a little house. I can shoot the 'New Jack City,' I can shoot it for real." And when he goes to Tinseltown, he'll have his S. Carters to remind him what he's capable of.

"It's not gonna give you superpowers, you ain't gonna never be this cool," Jay joked about his shoes before his signing at the Foot Locker. "I tell people, everybody don't buy sneakers to play ball in, people buy sneakers to match their clothes, walk around and front. It's beautiful, I come from Marcy Projects where we used to have to save up for a month to get a pair of sneakers. To come full circle and have my own sneaker shows people they can do anything."
