Kevin Ziebart, Watseka, accused murderer of two-year-old Kloie Van Hoveln,
was in court yesterday, but his pretrial hearing was canceled when his attorneys
could not get to Iroquois County for court.
Judge Gordon Lustfeldt said he'd received a message from Ziebart's attorney stating
that he was involved in another trial in Kankakee County and could not get to Watseka
in time for the hearing. Lustfeldt expressed his concern about the delay and said he
didn't want things delayed much longer because the murder trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 20.
Lustfeldt told Ziebart he was going to be involved in a trial in Kankakee County next week as
well. "What we're going to do, Mr. Ziebart, is reschedule your pretrial hearing for 1:30 p.m.
Monday in Kankakee County Court. The sheriff's department will transport you to Kankakee for
that hearing," Lustfeldt said.
Ziebart nodded his head as if in agreement and, as he was leaving the courtroom, he mouthed
a message to his grandfather, telling him he'd call him.
Ziebart has remained jailed without bail since Aug. 30, 2000, when former Iroquois County
State's Attorney Mark Thompson filed first-degree murder charges against him for Kloie's death.
Autopsy reports reveled Kloie died from injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, but Ziebart
has contended she fell from a sliding board in Legion Park.
Ziebart brought the baby to Iroquois Memorial Hospital early in the morning on Aug. 29, 2000, after
she had been left in his care by her mother, Paulette Moenck. Moenck had gone to work earlier that
morning and left Kloie with Ziebart at the apartment he and Moenck were sharing in Oppyville.
Kloie was transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, and she died the next day.

Please keep Kloie's family and friends
in your prayers.
