We first saw Black Duck in spring of 2000. She is a black Blue Swedish female. She disappeared for about a month and returned with nine ducklings! All but two of the ducklings survived and are currently living at the pond. Black Duck's first clutch consisted of: American Pied, Cinderella, Plain Jane, Silver, The Two Jokers, and Wizard. (Five of the seven ducklings in the photo above are hers. The yellow duckling on the far right is Cappie; one of the Jokers and Plain Jane are not pictured.)She disappeared again in 2001 and returned to the pond with ten ducklings! Unfortunately, she brought them to the pond right before a huge rainstorm. Four ducklings were lost that night, three more after that, then all of them were gone. We suspect they died of exposure, were killed by the sawn, or fell down the sewer.
Black Duck was courted by four ducks--all of her male ducklings from last year--but did not have a second clutch.
