The University of Northern Iowa began using the title of police officer in July 2003 for its sworn law enforcement officers (they attend the Iowa Law Enforcement academy).  The use of the word "police" had previously been denied by the State Board of Regents but was allowed after years of lobbying.  UNI DPS (Now Police Division) remarked their patrol cars to reflect the name change in July 2003.
