The Vicky Sunohara Award of Excellence

The Vicky Sunohara Award of Excellence was established in 1999 by the Whitby Girls Hockey Association (WGHA). It is presented annually to the player in the WGHA who best demonstrates the pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics and community service.

The award is named in honour of one of Canada's premier women's hockey players, Vicky Sunohara, captain of the Brampton Thunder of the National Women's Hockey League, a 5 time member of the Canadian women's world hockey championship team and a member of the silver medal winning team at the 1998 Olympics.

The Vicky Sunohara Award of Excellence, which includes a registered education savings plan scholarship, has been awarded in each of the four previous hockey seasons. Previous winners of this award include:

2001-2002 Senior Division: Kristen Alphonso
2001-2002 Junior Division: Kimmy Walters
2000-2001: Jessica O'Brien
1999-2000: Hayley Millard
1998-1999: Jen Cassidy
