The Egyptians believed that animals had powers so many of their Deities have animal parts.

Amon

This was the sun god of the Theban Warriors. Name meaning "The Hidden One". Amon was the most popular of Egypt's gods, even the Pharaoh feared his powerful priests. In the New Kingdom, Amon was linked with the deity Re. Re, who was depicted with the head of a Falcon and the tail of a Bull. As these two deities were merged, he was considered "The King of the Gods".

Anubis

This was the god of the Netherworld. Until Isis asked him for help with the burial of Osiris, for from then on the jackal headed deity was known as the God of Embalming. His task was to glorify and preserve the dead.

Bast

This was the cat-goddess, (AKA: Bastet). Bast was known as the goddess of the home, but later became equated with Sekhmet the lioness war goddess. She was pictured as a woman with a cat's head, carrying a percussion instrument and a sort of handbag.

Bes

This was the god of children and childbirth. This is one of the few gods that does not have an animal head. He was pictured as an undersized male with an oversized head, a feather crown, big eyes, a protruding tongue, and a tail. This comedic/horrible appearance was meant to drive away sorrow and scare off evil spirits. He was also revered as the deity of household pleasures such as music, good food and relaxation.

Geb

This was the god of the Earth, brother and husband of Mut (Nut) and father of Osiris, Set, Isis, Nephthys. His sacred animal and symbol was the goose. His skin was usually depicted the color of living things, and the color of the fertile Nile mud. It was said that Geb would hold the imprisoned souls of the wicked, so they could not ascend to the Heaven.

Hathor

This was the goddess of the sky, pleasure and "Protector of Women", pictured as the cow deity from earliest times. It was said that Re would send Hathor to exterminate those who conspired against Re. Later Re had a change of heart and diverted Hathor from her deadly mission. She was often connected and/or equated with Isis. She was usually shown with a solar disk flanked by cow horns on her head, along with the hieroglyph for "West". She was also considered the goddess of the dead. She was also the patron of love, dance, alcohol and foreign lands.

Horus

One of the more important deities of Egypt, as the son of Osiris and Isis, when reaching adulthood he avenged his fathers death by defeating and castrating his evil uncle Set. The apple of Horus's eye were his 4 sons, who's likeness appear on canopic jars.

Isis

This was perhaps the most important goddess (or even god in all of Egypt for that matter). Isis assumed the attributes and functions of virtually every other important goddess and god in the land. She was thought to be the most powerful magician in the universe, because she was said to have learned the secret name of Re from the god himself. The most important functions of this deity were those of motherhood, marital devotion, healing the sick and the working of magic spells and charms. She was the wife and sister of Osiris. She was said to have cow horns and was also pictured with a throne on her head.

Khnum

This was another creator-god, and was represented as having a ram headed human. He was said to have created men using a potter's wheel.

Ma'at

This beautiful goddess was the daughter of Re, represented truth and justice and Cosmic Order. Maat was shown as a tall woman with an ostrich feather in her hair. She judged the worthiness of the dead, her feather was balanced against the heart of the deceased to determine whether he led a pure and honest life.

Min

This was the god of virility. He was depicted as holding a flail, only wearing a crown and had a very large erect male member. Lettuces were offered as a sacrifice to him and then eaten in hopes of procuring manhood. Great festivals were held to celebrate his "Coming Forth".

Nephthys

This goddess was considered the special protectress of the dead. It was presumed that she abandoned Set after he murdered Osiris and assisted Isis in the care of Horus and the resurrection of Osiris. She was the mother of Anubis.

 

Nut (Mut)

This is the goddess of sky. She was the sister and wife of Geb, and mother of Osiris, Set, Isis and Nephthys. She was depicted as a naked women with blue skin and her body covered with stars, straddling or arched over her husband Geb, the Earth. It was said that each night she swallowed the sun and then gave birth to it again the following dawn.

Osiris

This was the god of the dead and the god of the resurrection into eternal life: ruler, protector of the dead. Osiris was one of the greatest gods of ancient Egypt, he was said to brought civilization to the land by introducing cattle raising and farming. It was said that Osiris ruled the world of men after Re abandoned the world to rule the skies, but he was murdered by his brother Set. Set was said to have learned the exact body measurements of Osiris and built a wooden chest to those specifications and tricked him to lay in it. Set quickly sealed the chest: poured molten lead over it and dropped it in the Nile Delta. Isis With the use of magic, Isis resurrected him , and being the first to die , he subsequently became lord of the dead.

Ptah

This god was seen as the creator of the Universe. He was the patron of artisans and artists. His priests were always the courts chief artists. He was pictured as a bearded man unfashionably clad in a sheet or wrappings the likes of a mummy. He held the Uas (Phoenix-headed scepter), an Ankh, and a Djed (the sign of Stability). He was the husband of Sekhmet and father of Nefertum and later said to be the father of Imhotep.

Sekhmet

This was the fierce War goddess. She was pictured having the head of a lioness. She was said to have been created from the fire of Re's eyes. She was vengeance to punish mankind for its sins. She was later made a peaceful goddess, the goddess of pleasure and happiness.

Set

This god was considered the epitome of Chaos and Destruction because he was best known for murdering his brother Osiris. It was said that Set had the head and personality of a dog (a mad one!). He was the brother of Osiris, Iris and Nephthys as well as her husband and father to Anubis although that was questioned. He was the sworn enemy of Horus who avenged his fathers death by defeating Set and castrating him and casting him to the desert for all time.

Thoth

This was the god of Wisdom and Moon. He was also known as the god of learning, the inventor of languages and writing. His consort was Ma'at. He was pictured as having the head of an ibis bird, and carried a quill and scrolls which he recorded all things. He was seen as n advisor between the gods and man. He was the one who oversaw and determined the weighing of mans heart proving their worthiness to enter the Hereafter.
