What's New Camps Coaching Competition Games The Chess World FAQ Books & Equipment Links

Greetings!

Welcome to the online home of the Portland Chess Institute.  We hope you enjoy your visit!  Once the site is finished, you'll find games from around the Pacific Northwest, and from around the world.  There will also be tactical studies, endgame studies, and various training exercises to help you grow as a player. You'll find some of our favorite chess books, and our thoughts on chess equipment and our favorite places to get it. You'll also find information on scholastic and non-scholastic tournaments and other chess events.

Building a useful and enjoyable website is an ongoing process.  It is also an interactive one, so please let us know what you like, what we might do differently, and what other things you'd like to see on the site.  And remember to check our "What's New" section for recent updates and additions.

A Little History

The  Portland Chess Institute was founded in 1997 by FIDE Master Chuck Schulien and Life Master Peter Prochaska.  Recognized as a Master by FIDE (the World Chess Federation) Chuck is also a USCF Senior Life Master.  He was 1997-98 Oregon Chess Champion, the 1997 Portland Chess Club Champion, and is the reigning Oregon Open Champion.  He is currently the second ranked player in Oregon.  Pete is also among the top players in Oregon, serves as an editor of Northwest Chess magazine, and is the resident instructor at the Portland Chess Club.  Pete is also President of the Oregon Chess Federation, while Chuck serves on the OCF Board of Directors.

Our Purpose

The Portland Chess Institute exists for two simple reasons---to help you enjoy chess more, and to win more games.  Between us, we have something over 45 years of coaching experience, and we've been competitive players for longer than that.    We've developed our methods and concepts out of that experience, both as coaches and competitors.  We are both serious students Russian training techniques, approaches that have produced a staggering number of World Champions and top Grandmasters.

We are professional chess masters .  Individually, and together, we work with adults, juniors, and scholastic groups throughout Oregon and southern Washington.  In 1999, four of our teams, and more than twenty of our students played in the OMSI Finals.  To see what this year looks like, check out the "PCI Kids at OMSI" page.  Follow the links starting with "Competition", and then going to "Tournaments."
