Ah…one of those great vampire movies. Ailly claims it’s great just for the last line of the movie. I think it’s great for many things…the holy water bathtub, death by stereo, the Frog brothers in general, the large accumulation of taxidermed animals, the elusive Widow Johnson and Grandpa’s Windex. Not to mention waking up on the ceiling and floating away…
I like Star’s clothes, mostly because I dress like her sometimes and was pleasantly surprised to see asmuch when I first watched the movie. I also love Laddie… “He’s just a little boy!”. The kid has a cool jacket and is probably the youngest vampire around anywhere. He’s all of about four or five.
David kicked butt. If you’ve seen that movie and like the actor here, you should see his rather insignificant role in “Stand By Me” playing a bully that I personally think is way up on narcotics.
The scenery was terrific. I love the shots of the boardwalk that appear all through the movie and the accumulation of weird people featured at the beginning while the very appropriate song “People Are Strange” was playing. The set of Michael and Sam’s grandfather’s house is also great. I’d love to live in a house like that (minus the taxidermy). Tis a pity that there’s almost nothing left to it at the end.
I own a bootleg copy of the soundtrack and have the lyrics to “Cry, Little Sister” tacked up on my wall. Whoever organised the music did a wonderful job. The opening cuts are overlayed with “People Are Strange” as performed by Echo and the Bunnymen. “Beauty Has Her Way”, by Mummy Calls, makes a brief appearance as Star gets on the back of David’s motorcycle. Gerard McMann’s “Cry, Little Sister” (the theme from The Lost Boys) appears many times over, particularly during Michael and Star’s sex scene (which was overlayed with shots of dark water).
“The Lost Boys” is great all-around. California, vampires, music, and taxidermy. It doesn’t get much better than that.
