Spaceballs Review

I first watched Spaceballs as a very young child and failed to notice that it was intended to be a humorous movie. I took what parts I remembered seriously, but forgot most things. For about ten years I wondered over the image of a man passing unconcious on his desk while grieving for his daughter, trying to recall where I had seen it (that and a television screen in a bathroom).
And then I watched Spaceballs with Burbage, Sean, Ailly, and Beck.
It all came back to me!
Except this time around, I realized that it was a comedy. The fact that it had Mel Brooks in it was a pretty big giveaway. But as a four-year-old I had no idea. I feel stupid. But that’s alright.
Like most Mel Brooks movies, lots of things about Spaceballs (Plot: the Spaceballs are out to steal the atmosphere from other planets, having used their own up. A princess, a starship pilot, a droid, and a furry guy must put a stop to it with the aid of a gnarled short guy) that are intended as funny are not. There are a few redeeming parts, but not much.
However I could now appreciate the double entrendes and sight gags that had gone right over my head a decade ago. I laughed, but they were cheap, dirty laughs. Most of my laughs during Mel Brooks movies are like that.
