Back to the Doctor

I have two doctors, one who sees me on weekdays during regular office hours and one who sees me for weekend emergencies. They are both wonderful. I had to see my weekend doctor today. We have three cats. Two of them don't get along and I was pulling the big one away from the little one. Our big cat, Dandelion, is about 16 years old. He wants to defend our home against all intruders. He regards a new little cat, Myst, as such an intruder. I suppose in time, he will calm down and we can keep them in separate rooms, but this one time he got a little anxious to defend us.

Jumping into the middle of a cat fight is dangerous, but I wanted to prevent any cat from getting damaged. Therefore, our normally sweet, adorable big cat bit me instead. Deeply. I know his intentions were good so I do not hold a grudge, but I had to go get a tetanus shot and some antibiotic today due to the swelling and signs of infection that followed. Oh well, we still love all of our cats. I just wish everybody could get along with everybody else.

Calvin & Hobbes Snowmen

Thanks to Jennifer C. for these and to Beautiful Stuff for the link. I'd forgotten just how funny these are. I miss this comic strip. I wish they were still producing new stuff. This is hilarious --> Creative Snowmen.

Alphonse Mucha

I just discovered the art of Alphonse Mucha (born in 1860 in Ivancice, Moravia). Great stuff here. I love it.

Fried Twinkies

Has anyone tried fried Twinkies? I found this recipe in a newspaper article:

FRIED TWINKIES

10 Twinkies
1 & 1/4 cups flour
1 tablespoon malt vinegar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 & 1/2 cups water
Oil for frying

Flour for dusting
Powdered sugar
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 cup frozen blackberries
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup frozen blueberries
4 tablespoons sugar

Cool Twinkies in refrigerator. Whisk together 1 cup flour with vinegar, baking powder, salt, and water until batter is the consistency of custard. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 400 degrees. Roll each Twinkie in remaining flour, then roll in batter. Drop Battered Twinkie in the fryer for about 90 seconds, until the outside is golden brown and the filling starts to melt. Top with powdered sugar, cut in half on the bias, and serve with four-berry coulis.

To make the coulis, put berries into a pan on low heat and add sugar. When the mixture begins to boil, put in a blender and then strain the seeds through a sieve. Serves 10.

Fake Tsunami Photos

Circulating all over the Internet are fake tsunami photos. As skeptical as I can be, I was even falling for these until one of them looked a little too good. After doing a check at Snopes.com, I learned that MANY of the photos are fakes. Doing a search there with the word, tsunami, brought some interesting results.

And this is just the beginning of a deluge of stories and photos which will be proven false. Please don't believe anything until it can be verified.

Best Photos from CES

Here's a PC World site with photos of the new stuff from CES - The Consumer Electronics Show. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see more photo and story links. I'll take one of everything, thank-you. I'd like to go to the show itself, for that matter.

Losing Weight, Backing Up Data, etc.

My husband is losing weight. He was looking for a new belt and I figured he could use some new clothes, too. He's looking good.

Right now, he is trying to decide how best to backup his documents. Currently, the best option looks like another hard drive. I wonder if data on a hard drive lasts longer than data on a DVD -- maybe so. With all the recent information on how CDs and DVDs can not hold data nearly as long as we thought, a hard drive looks like the better choice.

Canon Powershot S70

I was reading photography magazines at the library today and found one little treasure of a camera. If I needed a small camera today, this is it --> Canon Powershot S70. It has its problems, though. I can't find a tiny camera without some drawbacks. At least this one is rated high for scenery shots.

But my trusty Minolta DiMage Xt is holding out well. I've had it for a year and half, used it nearly every day and it is still working, producing great photos. According to reviews I've read, the Xt is a better-than-average camera and still beats more recent reincarnations.

Memory Stick Standard Needed

It would be so-o-o-o-o-o-o nice to have a standard for memory sticks. Look at all of these -- and they are just the ones from Sandisk. Right now, I've got at least 3 different kinds -- I wish I could interchange them.
