Joseph Sampson now heads 10 generations of Sampson's originating in East Smithfields, Middlesex. His first mention is in 1752 as a Coachman when his son John gained entry into the Worshipful Company of Coopers in the City of London. John gained the city's Freedom twenty five years later as his son John also became a Cooper. George was John jnr's second son and moved to Uttoxeter in the early 1800's plying his trade as a Cork Cutter and establishing a large family there where some of his descendants still live. George's itchy-feet gene was passed down to George jnr in considerable quantities and the Boot & Shoemaker proved his boots were made for walking long distances, first to Wolstanton in Stoke, then to Swinton, Lancs where he popped his last pair of well-made clogs at the home of his youngest son Frederick, a miner who not only survived the Pendlebury Colliery disaster in 1885 but still had enough energy to father a total of 13 children (no internet genealogy in those days y'see). Arthur then took the torch of the itchy-feet gene to County Durham for several years and returned to Swinton where Arthur jnr took up the motorised reins of Joseph as a Motor Driver. My Dad however has lived within a mile radius of Swinton all his life but made up for the lack of the IFG by becoming the towns last, and youngest Mayor. As for me, I've done nothing of importance like my Dad....but I can't sit still for more than five minutes, ask anyone in Dorset, Cumbria or Aberdeen.....and I'm a Van Driver to boot (pun definitely intended)
