Paul Cooney and Dave O'Sullivan at Centre Park Road, 2000.

I remember joining Cork City Civil Defence in Febuary 1998 when it was located just behind the City Fire Station on Anglesea street. That was where all of the volunteers assembled on the day of the Tour de France in 1998 aswell, when the Tour had Ireland as its international stage2 location (Enniscorthy to Cork). Being behind the central station had its advantages but the decision came that we were to move to the old Esso Depot on Centre Park Road for a while. There was more space to store the vehicles and a larger training yard, with a storage unit on the other side. It was here that we trained and strained over the years from 2001 to the near present when we moved again to the Pouladuff Road near the airport. It's on the south just below the airport. It has less space than before but it just means we use what we have more (see below).

I always preferred the Civil Defence as I had spent so many years in scouts previously and I felt more comfortable in a role where the aim of the organisation was to save life. Nowadays, much of the youth are attracted to outfits where they are paid for the time they spend in training. Sadly, Civil Defence participation, like that of The Red Cross and St. John Ambulance, is for the most part voluntary. The aspect that appeals to me most about the A.F.S. was always the interaction with the public which was inevitable through activities such as the Cork Mini-Marathons, City Sports days, St. Patrick's Day Parades and fire duties for events like Ventact South in Kilcully Scout and Activity Centre. The skills I acquired in Road Traffic Accident Procedures and in areas like stewarding will always stand to me and give me a different outlook on life, always making me more mentally aware of situations I encounter.
