HDTV Calibration by Larry Proud

HDTV Calibration

I have been involved with Big Screen TV,
Stereo, and Home Theater since the inception
of each. Being an early adopter usually means
you get to pay too much for the product and
you have to learn on your own.

Most of my equipment has been "MidFi" and
the tweaks that get you the very best picture and
sound with the least amount of money invested.
This means you have to do a lot of research
and try a lot of strange things before you can
get everything to work it's best.

I enjoy the challange and the satisfaction
from seeing it all work out in the end so it
has been my hobby for many years.

After buying a 55" Mitsubishi Wide Screen
HDTV in October 2000 I was introduced to
TheHomeTheaterSpot and started reading everything
posted about HDTV, Home Theater, and Mitsubishi TV.
When I got up the nerve to go into the service menu
and make changes it was then easy to go into the
Mitsu Tweaks section and start doing every tweak listed.

Soon I had tweaked everything I could but knew
there was still more to be had, so I signed up for the
Mr Bob Calibration Tour to get a professional calibration.
Mr Bob (Robert P. Jones from California) has over 20 years
experience and is considered to be among the Elite of calibrators.
Upon first seing my TV Mr Bob commented he could clearly
see scan lines at ten feet and the picture was excellent.
He said he could not make any big improvements,
but could do some subtle tweaks that would improve
depth and definition. This he did quite well! The man is
an absolute perfectionist! He spent hours working on Geometry
and Convergence until he was satisfied it was perfect.
Mr Bob spent two days with me and had lots of time
to show me how he did his tweaks and why they worked.
I asked Mr Bob if he thought I could do well as a calibrator.
He said I have the natural talent but it takes a lot of practice
to be really good, so that's what I started doing.

Never being one to do anything half way,
I attended the ISF Seminar for Video Calibration
the HAA Seminar for Audio Calibration
and passed all of the certification tests.

I purchased a Sencore CP-288 Color Analyzer
and an IBM Laptop computer to set Greyscale,
and a Sencore VP-300 Signal Generator to supply
the test patterns for HD and NTSC.

Next came the development of the I2C Interface to allow
setting the "locked out" codes in the newer Mitsu HDTVs.
I aquired the equipment and learned to use the I2C Interface
to adjust the Color Decoder to eliminate "Red Push",
change Edge Enhancement and set Iris Control modes.

After an investment of over $8500.00 (and growing)
and an additional six months of practicing on my own
Mitsu and any friends sets I could get my hands on,
I decided to start doing professional calibrations.

I work ONLY on HDTVs and limit myself
to the Dallas/Ft Worth and 200 mile surrounding area.

I do a Full Calibration at one price
with no limit to time spent on the job.
