The Dreamcast servers were nearing retirement. Sega had decided to hedge bets and release it on two systems. Another poor decision as this suceeded in splitting the DC PSO fans and community. This led to some fans buying the GC version and some buying the XBox version. A lot of fans didnt buy either. Some had been gangbanged by Sonys PS2 brainwashing techniques, some were confused about getting online or unhappy about paying for a Hunters Licence (We didnt need a HL on DC in UK because by the time we got it the rest of the world were probably Level 100). Also many people did not realise this was a new game not just the same old same old heck they didnt want to pay for the same thing they used to play for free! This misrepresentation was damaging to sales. As well as having the original Story there was also Episode 2 a continuation of it with new areas, character classes and lots more.

Why did I choose the Gamecube? One reason was Nintendo had a sort of we love games and gamers first and your money second badge just like Sega (They make kick-ass games but struggle to sell them). Microsoft had a sort of Evil Give Us All Your Money Empire feel about it although not in the sense of Satan Give Us All Your Money And Your Soul Sony. The main reason from a PSO angle was that at that time I only had dialup. Broadband had not taken off in a big way yet. The XBox and PS2 were get Broadband or SodOff Poor Cave Dwellers. So us Poor Cave Dwellers that had developed a thirst for PSO were left with the Gamecube. I opted for a black GC with SWRogueLeaderRS2 and waited patiently for the new PSO release. On getting the GC version I met up with a lot of DC vets which was great and even im happy to say I met some people who had never played PSO before. Overall the numbers for these versions added together did not even equal the number of people who played the Dreamcast Version in its prime. Ironically I now have a Broadband Connection. Nintendo didnt really support Online gaming for Gamecube whereas Microsoft have. This probably led to the GC version being the most popular as it had no competition from other titles (dont get me started about Ep3CardRev LOL). Even more ironically I hear Nintendos next gen Revolution machine will support wireless internet gaming.
