Introduction

PCYip Linux is a small ELF distribution in only 4.45MB archive. It comes with Kernel 2.4.8 and many useful utilities. Some ready-to-install packages are available to enhance its power. Normally, a Linux distribution requires users to do the repartition task which may make new "Linuxers" trouble. To install PCYip Linux, simply download an "exe" file and execute it. This allows you to experiment with Linux on your existing MSDOS/Win9x partition. You do not need to know anything about fdisk, lilo, fat16, fat32, ext2, bootdisk, rootdisk, etc.

The minimal hardware requirements for a PCYip Linux system are 386, 8MB RAM, 8MB free hard disk (IDE) space on a non-compressed DOS volume, VGA for X Window.

What's New?

In the previous versions, PCYip Linux provided a safe environment to new "Linuxers" (especially to my students who were taking the course "UNIX Workshop" or "Systems Administration") for changing the system settings. The system restores to default settings after rebooting even if some system files have been removed or system settings have been wrongly amended. On the other hand, somebody complained they cannot install some applications (which are downloaded on the Internet and require to change system settings) onto PCYip Linux. To solve this problem, I have decided to give up this feature. The changes in this version include:

to allow the system administrator to change system settings
to allow the system administrator to install other applications downloaded on the Internet
to support more sound cards and configure your sound card with the sndconfig utility
to use the up-to-date kernel that is more stable than the old one

Installation (Version 0.9.2)

Download plinux.exe (PCYip Linux - Base) and double click it to install "PCYip Linux - Base".
Download all the Ready-to-Install Packages you like and execute them before your first booting.
To load PCYip Linux, simply go to c:\linux and type "linux" in the real DOS mode.
To log on your Linux, input "root" for the login name (no password).
To configure, reconfigure, or add a new downloaded package, simply type "setup" after login.
Caution: please make sure your system has sufficient space to install all downloaded packages before going on. To know the file system size or resize your file system, simply select RESIZE in setup.
After a new package has been added, the "ppl" (stands for "Package for PCYip Linux") file(s) can be removed from your Linux directory. To do this, simply type:
del c:\linux\*.ppl (on DOS)
rm /DOS/linux/*.ppl (on Linux)
To uninstall your Linux system, simply go to Win9x's Control Panel and double click the "Add/Remove Program" icon to uninstall "PCYip Linux - Base". This will remove all your Linux files.
