Introduction

PCYip Linux is a small ELF distribution in only 2.86MB archive. It comes with Kernel 2.2.12 and many useful utilities. Some ready-to-install packages are available to enhance it's power. Normally, a Linux distribution needs repartition task which may make new "Linuxer" trouble. With PCYip Linux you can simply download a Ziped file and extract it into the Linux directory "C:\linux". This allows you to experiment with Linux on your existing MSDOS partition. You do not need to know anything about fdisk, lilo, fat16, fat32, ext2, bootdisk, rootdisk, etc.

The minimal hardware requirements for a PCYip Linux system are 386SX, 8MB RAM, 5MB free disk space on IDE HDD (using SCSI HDD for C: requires a little modification) on a non-compressed DOS volume, VGA for X Window.

You need to reconfigure your X Window to 8-bit-depth colors (256 colors) before running DOOM. To run DOOM, simply type "doom" in xterm or konsole.		 2.01M

To update your "xconfig", download xconfig into c:\
and type "cp /etc/DOS/xconfig /usr/sbin" on Linux. 		4.3K




Installation

  1. Create a directory called "Linux" on your drive C:
    md c:\linux
  2. Download PLINUX.ZIP (PCYip Linux - Base) and unzip it into this directory
    pkunzip PLINUX.ZIP c:\linux (if you don't have WinZip)
  3. Download all the Ready-to-Install Packages you like into your Linux directory (c:\linux)
  4. To load PCYip Linux, simply go to c:\linux and type "linux"
  5. During your first boot, a setup script will be executed automatically for creating your Linux space and configure your system
  6. To log on your Linux, input "root" for Login line (no password)
  7. To run X Window, simply type "startx" on the UNIX shell
  8. To add a new downloaded package or reconfigure your system, simply type "setup" after login
  9. After your system has been installed or a new package has been added, the 'PPL' (stands for Package for PCYip Linux) file(s) can be removed from your Linux directory. To do this, simply type:
    del c:\linux*.ppl (on DOS)
    rm /etc/DOS/linux/*.ppl (on Linux)
  10. To uninstall your Linux system, simply remove the whole directory C:\LINUX
    deltree /y c:\linux
