    Chapter Three
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Angel Attacks
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    "Eva launch!"

    With that, Eva Unit 01 rocketed up to the surface of the cruel world. The citadel that had once been Tokyo 3 was in ruins. Buildings were charred and battered. Windows were broken and cars were overturned. As Shinji emerged from the ground, he felt the power of this new angel.

    "Be careful Shinji," Misato ordered over the com system. "Don't let that thing suck you in."

    "No..." Shinji replied coldly. He pulled his progressive knife from its holster and prepared to rush the angel.

    "Shinji, don't be stupid..." Misato replied angrily at Shinji's aggressive stance. "We're not sure what that'll do to you Shinji, be careful."

    "Whatever." Shinji replied coldly, shifting to the right to get a better view of the imposing angel. The cyclone, as far as he could tell, was enormous. It was nearly three blocks wide and stretched as high as he could see.

    A loud noise to Shinji’s right caused startled him. He turned quickly to his right as a large building appeared to be pulled clear out of the ground. It must have been nearly thirty stories tall. No cyclone could do that Shinji thought to himself as the once mighty building hurdled past him.

    Misato gasped as the building tumbled through the air towards the imposing angel. "Oh my God..." Maya cried as the building was swung around the cyclone and launched like a slingshot right at Unit 01. "SHINJI NO!!!!" Misato screamed, but he never heard her.

    The building crashed into Shinji's AT field, driving Unit 01 back through another building. Unit 01 laid there, motionless, covered in the debris from two different buildings.

    "What's the pilot's status?" Misato screamed out, staring up at the monitor.

    "Shinji's alive but he doesn’t seem to be responding!” Maya called out, “We’ve lost contact with Unit 01!”

    Ritsuko replied, "Oh my God..." she stopped, looking up at the monitor.

    The cyclone slowed, revealing a dark specter to fearful to put into words. It appeared to be a figure made entirely of dark energy. It was roughly three times the size of Unit 01. Electricity flashed around its body as it extended its arm out to the sky.

    Without warning, Unit 01 levitated into the air, steel, glass, and cement raining down from it. It was slowly drawn towards the angel, a bolt of electricity running from the angel's finger to Unit 01's chest.

    "Wha... what's it doing?" Misato asked looking around the room for an answer. She found none.

    Then, without warning Unit 01 released a deep growl, one full of rage and of sorrow. Unit 01's eyes lit brightly as it appeared to grab the electricity itself and throw the angel into a building. Unit 01 then reached into the rubble it had been buried in and pulled out its progressive knife. “Is… is it going berserk?” Misato asked, staring at her monitor.

    “N… no” Maya stuttered, “The Pilot is still in control”

    "Shinji are you there?" Misato screamed into the com.

    "I'm destroying the target..." Shinji replied coldly and confidently.

    Unit 01 charged through the streets of Tokyo 3, fixated on the angel. It lay crumpled under the remains of a tall skyscraper. Unit 01 leapt into the air, pouncing down on the battered angel. Unit 01 reared back with the prog knife and drove it down into the dark mass. Unit 01 stabbed the mass over and over again before dropping the knife. Finally, Unit 01 reached into the angel, putting its hand through the S2 organ.

    "The target is silent." Maya stated quietly...

    Asuka lay silent in her bed, simply gazing into nothingness. She had been like that for three days now, conscious, but simply unable, or unwilling, to speak. No one knew exactly when she had come out of her coma. All anybody knew was that after the battle with the angel, a nurse had gone in to check on the young pilot and found that she had been 'awake' so to speak.

    Misato stood steadfast at the door to Asuka's room. She had been there off and on since the battle ended, and still nothing. She had tried to talk to the young pilot, but nothing seemed to get through. She simply watched the child stare and became very introspective, remembering her own childhood...

    "The subject responds to no stimulus..." Dr. Takomi said slowly, looking through the window at the young girl. He sipped his coffee, shaking his head.

    "What did you expect Doctor? She was the only survivor of the whole research team, and she's only a little girl." The nurse replied quietly.

    The young Misato Katsuragi sat silently in her chair, staring into nothingness. She couldn't speak. No matter how hard she tried, the words simply would not come. All she could do was stare at those thickly padded walls that were her refuge and protection. The door in front of her slowly opened and her doctor and nurse stepped in. They were speaking quietly amongst themselves, too low for her to understand their words, but loud enough to peak her interest.

    The doctor finally turned away from the nurse and spoke to her. "How are you today Misato?" He asked softly with a smile. Her heart wanted to scream out, but she simply couldn't. "I see..." He said solemnly. He turned back to the nurse and whispered something to her. She nodded softly, glancing at Misato and walking out, shutting the door behind her. Somehow, it made Misato feel better that the woman was gone.

    "It's alright, she's gone now." Dr. Takomi said softly, squatting down so as to look Misato in the eyes. How did he know what she was thinking. She wanted to weep for his understanding, but she simply couldn't.

    He stood, putting his hand on her shoulder. She felt his warmth and all that was in her melted in a second and she let out a single tear, a tear that had been welling up inside her for as long as she could remember.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    "Misato?" a voice called to her as she returned to the real world. She turned her head to the right to see Shinji walking down the hall slowly. "What's wrong?" he asked her, knowing that something other than the obvious was bothering her.
    Misato put her hand to her face, realizing that she had been crying. She wiped her tears away and gave Shinji a half smile. "Oh..." she started softly, but the words wouldn't come. She simply collapsed into Shinji, wrapping her arms around him and sobbing hard into his chest. Shinji didn't know what to do except to stand there and hold Misato up as she cried into his shoulder.
    No... Not her... Me... It has to be me.... IT MUST BE...
    "Me..." Asuka cried out quietly.
    To Be Continued...
    Author's Notes:
    First, I'd like to again thank Alnilam for working on this chapter. Massive thanx and honor go to you my friend.
    Okay, so the explanation of Shinji's actions and Asuka's mind haven't been exposed yet. Sit tight. It is coming in the next two chapters. How do I know this? Well, they're already written already. While chapters 1-3 have been completed (thankfully) I am still working on the final Dark Vault Edition of Chapters Four and Five as well as Chapter Six. However, the original editions of Chapters 4&5 will still be at the DV in text format. I'm working on the revisions and the sixth chapter big time. I hope to have them up soon. Until then, send your feedback to me at TheAmaizingApe@aol.com
