LEGISLATOR PROPOSES LATER STARTING TIME

 By Jason DeRosa
Connecticut Senate President Kevin Sullivan is rallying for support of his proposal to push back school's starting time to 8:30 a.m. He says it's unnatural and physiologically wrong for teenagers to start learning anytime before 8:30 a.m. Ò
"Early to bed and early to rise is not in the makeup of teens at that age," says Sullivan.
Senior Jill Kish seconds that statement by saying, "I've always felt I could never do as well on first-period tests and quizzes, not to mention class discussions. I'm simply not fully functional."
The idea that test scores will be examined more closely by policy makers in the coming years is exactly Sullivan's primary selling point. Higher test scores are the major predicted benefit of the proposal.
Republican lawmakers see problems with the bill. Time conflicts will occur left and right, according to some Republicans. These interferences will include tripled transportation costs for most school districts.
After-school activities and sports will suffer cones as well because of the pushed-back time schedule, according to lawmakers quoted in a Feb. 17 New Haven Register story. Schools may even have to install lights on playing fields for fall sports practices since Daylight Savings Time ends in October.
Regardless of the drawbacks, the bill is still winning support. Lawmakers feel it has a lot of merit but feel the decision should be left for the individual districts. No districts have taken a definite potion yet.
