STUDENT COURT IS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO H-K's MISDEMEANORS

 By Billy Padula
The suspension rate at H-K has increased considerably this year as opposed to past years, according to records compiled by the school. Students believe that Student Court would be one solution to decreasing H-K's misdemeanors.
Student Court is a new idea which has been suggested by several students. Student court is a philosophy involving the student body in administrative decision, according to junior Ashley Cunningham.
"It is important for students to be involved," said Cunningham.
Student court would be a committee of students along with administrative officials. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in the political process of the school in judging certain cases of misdemeanor, such as food fights or "snowballin'."
Mrs. McGee, agrees with the concept of a student court to some extent.
"It is a very good way for students to judge peers in cases of misdemeanor," said McGee. "However, legal situations such as drugs and fights should be left entirely to the administrative staff."
"The punishment should fit the crime," said Mr. Cunningham, head of the technology department. "For example, if a student starts a food fight, then that student should be responsible for cleaning up the cafeteria."
"I believe student court would be a much more accurate system of judging students than the present system," said senior Ally Chester.
Ashley Cunningham's idea of student court is currently under consideration by the administration as a way of involving student in a more democratic style of judgment, according to the administration.
