Federal Prosecutors Sue Over Dallas County Jail Conditions

Kaylee: This letter concerns a man currently being held in the Dallas County Jail. He has been through a police line-up. The couple said he was not the person who took their check book and credit cards. His attorney keeps trying to get him to plead guilty or take a plea bargain. They have told him that if he doesn't do this, they can make him sit in the jail for one to two years awaiting a trial. The conditions there are over-crowded, there are several health issues including inmates not being given their medication. Sometimes they have to sleep on the floor. I am very concerned for his well being. Thank you for your concern and any help you can provide.

Dallas County's jail population is at 7,870 as of Mid-July 2005

NOTE: Everyone should be aware by now that we are using incarceration as the first resort, not for people we fear, but for people whose choices we do not approve of or whose situation we refuse to tolerate. Who will claim the united states is free anymore? Not the innocent man sitting in his cell in despair because the system made another mistake. Not the small time pot smoker who was sitting on his couch in his own home hurting no one, using a plant of the earth, when a gang of swat thugs burst through the door and hauled him off to prison. Not the 'deadbeat dad' who couldn't find a job to pay his child support, Certainly not the homeless man who is serving a life sentence for being hustled off for vagrancy 3 times in a state that refuses to let their homeless population be seen and harbors the 3-strike laws to make sure they disappear. Want to really cut down on jail/prison overcrowding? Then for the Love of God, quit arresting so many people! Kay Lee
