The most light hearted of the Tolkien books
that I've read, it's actually pretty cute and I like it. The book talks about
Tharanduil (The Elf King) but many people think that he's mean, well at least
most people that I've talked to. Anyway it's a good book, obviously, and it
Tharanduil
The King of Mirkwood, formaly callled Greenwood, Thranduil is
the father of Legolas who was one of the nine walkers. Tharanduil is, as far as I have
seen, considered greedy and mean by many. I, however, don't think that it's
true. Yes, he did lock up the dwarves and demand to know what they were doing
but that wasn't strange. After all if you found people wandering around in your
home, and they wouldn't tell you why they were there then wouldn't you call the
police to have them locked up? After that he helps the people of Dale when Smaug
comes and attacks them. After Bard the Bowman kills Smaug both Tharanduil and
the men of Dale demand compensation from Smaugs horde for the damages that they
have suffered. When Thorin and company refuse to give them anything he and Bard
got angry. Then again who wouldn't? I mean the Dwarves just basically sicked
Smaug on the town of Dale and then they say 'oh not our problem' also they come
and don't even kill Smaug, Bard does that, and yet they say that all the
treasure is theres? The Elves and Humans that died killing Smaug, oh well once
more, not their problem. I can understand completely why Tharanduil was so upset
with them. But before they could really fight the Goblins and the Wargs came and
attacked them. The Dwarves, Humans and Elves banded together and the battle
became known as the battle of the five armies.
Bard
Bard the Bowman, abbreviated Bard, the heir of Girion
Smaug
Smaug the Golden was a reddish gold dragon who took control of
Ereborn, also known as The Lonely Mountain. Smaug slept on his pile of treasures
for so long that the gems formed a type of armor al over his underbelly, save in
one small spot. Bilbo found out about it and told the Dwarves. A thrush
overheard them and went and told Bard the same thing. Because of this
small kink in the armor he was killed by Bard the Bowman. It was a good thing
for the people of the west that he was killed when he was, for if he had not
been he could have been an instrument of Sauron during the war of the ring.
