With greedy developers about to raze their area, this feisty group of under-privileged kids - whose housing project is about to be destroyed are spending one last adventure-filled, drizzly Saturday morning together. This happens after they find an authentic 17th-century pirate map - and begin a dazzling, day-long quest for a treasure rich enough to save their homes. They enter a subterranean world filled with caverns, crooks, skeletons, booby-traps, a once-mighty pirate ship and a milquetoast of a monster with swivel piglet ears and a face only Frankenstin could love.

An experimental journey into the nightscape of Los Angeles through the eyes of four characters who each suffer from a different sleep disorder: an insomniac, a sleepwalker, a narcoleptic and a compulsive sleeper. In the tradition of essay films such as Chris Marker's SAN SOLEIL, the film weaves analytical documentary footage with an abstract narrative, moving through a dark world of sounds that often go unnoticed. These moments explode into an associative structure featuring interviews with doctors, footage from sleep labs, text, and hypnagogic experimental sections. At its core, the film is a meditation on human consciousness, raising questions about our own perceptions of sleep and film. 1999 BellyFruit Independent Women Artists, a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for women artists to share their talent with at-risk communities, gave a group of teen mothers a forum to share their stories. The results, beautifully illustrated life experiences that were powerful, funny and tragic tales, were first produced as a play at the Los Angeles Theater Center in 1996. The overwhelmingly positive response inspired the artists to expand the play into the film, BELLYFRUIT; a strikingly honest trilogy that shines a unique light on the often simplified and stereotyped social issue of unwed teen motherhood.
