All students who apply for the University of Michigan Medical School are considered on the basis of individual qualifications.


  • Motivation,

  • Academic preparation,

  • Character, and

  • Personal fitness for the study of medicine

For acceptance into the University Michigan Medical School you will need to have completed at least three years (90 semester hours) of undergraduate work from an accredited college or university in the United States.  The courses that must be included in the 90 semester hours of undergraduate work are:


  • Eight Semester Hours of Inorganic Chemistry (with lab)

  • Eight Semester Hours of Organic Chemistry (with lab)

  • Three Semester Hours of Biochemistry

  • Six Semester Hours of Biology (with lab)

  • Six Semester Hours of Physics (with lab)

  • Six Semester Hours of English Composition and Literature

  • Twelve Semester Hours of a Non-Science, Non-Math class

Genetics and cell biology are highly recommended courses.  The MCAT is required before the application is even considered.
