Sulawesi

A good way to explore Sulawesi is to start from south and work your way up north. If you arrive by noon or later in Ujung Pandang I suggest that you stay overnight and have your dinner at the waterfront where all the foodstalls fill up the beachroad. Get a early morning bus to Tana Toraja, the road is quite OK until it starts to climb up in the mountainious regions of Toraja. The beautiful scenery and a good guide will make your visit a memory for life. The climate is pleasant during the day but remember that nights can be very cold up here.

In the central parts you will find two big national parks; Lore Lindu with the famous megalith sculptures and the Morowali reserve with the Wana people still living their very untouched life. In the Tomini Bay you can stay at one of the small islands in the Togean archipelago. This is excellent waters for diving and snorkeling, you will have the corals just outside your window!

If you are in to watersports you will probably not miss the world famous reef of Bunaken. It is located just northeast of Manado, the capital of northern Sulawesi.
